Day 261: Recap!

Day 253: The Life you are Called to Love

So, this devo was originally titled "The Life you are Called to Live" but the typo ended up working out in our favor. However, today we talked about living the life God has called us to live. We talked about how God gave us the life we have for a reason. We also touched on how being a Christian does not strip us from who we are. We talked about living the story God is writing for us, He knows how it ends. We focused on 1 Corinthians 7:17-19.

"We cannot live someone else's life and if we try it's not called living it called imitating. More like plagiarizing life. No story is exactly the same. Live the story God is writing for you. I promise it's amazing"

Day 254: People's Opinions

Today we talked about not caring for people's opinions or their ideas of who you are. We talked about being comfortable with who we are and realizing that the only person we are here to please is God. We really talked about ignoring people's opinions and living for ourselves and being comfortable and confident with who we are. We focused on Proverbs 29:25.

" Don’t allow the opinions of others dictate who you are and how you view yourself. God made you who you are for a reason. People’s opinions either elevate you or tear you down, you have to choose which ones are meant for your life."

Day 255: Occupy Your Street

Today we talked about doing God's work from right where we are. We talked about how we often feel like we have to leave where we are and stop what we are doing to serve God. We basically talked about using the gifts God has given us in order to advance His kingdom from right where we are. Doing everything we do to the glory of God. We focused on 1 Corinthians 7:20-24 and Colossians 3:23.

" Wherever you are, whatever you do, glorify God, from right where you are. That’s what it means to occupy your street. You don’t always have to travel halfway across the world to do the Lord’s work, you can do it right here."

Day 256: The Language of the Heart

Today we talked about how we are sometimes deceived by our hearts how we speak what is in our heart. We talked about how we speak, how we speak to others, about ourselves, and about God. We talked about how the way we speak reveals who we are, or at least who we are pretending to be.

" Whatever is on our lips reveals what is in our hearts. What I’m saying is, is the word of God on our lips, and furthermore is it in our hearts? See when we have the word of God in our lives, and it written on our hearts, the condition of our hearts are in great shape."

Day 257: Know It All

Today we talked about how knowledge is good but love is great. We talked about how we can know everything we need to know about the bible but if we do not have a relationship with God it means nothing. There is a difference between knowing of God and knowing God. We focused on 1 Corinthians 8:1-3.

"We don’t know it all and that’s actually more than okay. It’s good. In our lack of knowledge we find that we draw closer to god because we want to know Him. Not because we want to boast about how much we know about Him."

Day 258: Our Brother's Keeper

Today we talked about the responsibility of being our brother's keeper. We talked about how we often think that we are not responsible for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Chenin fact we are, we talked about picking up those who are falling and making sure they have a way of we can provide that way for them. We focused on 1 Corinthians 8:13 and Galatians 6:1-2. 

"We are to carry one another’s burdens not make the weight heavier or say they can handle it. I think sometimes we are so consumed with not wanting to get in someone’s business or letting  them figure it out on their own that we are letting people drown that need our help. People are reaching for us and we are waiting for them to save themselves."

Day 230: You Decide

Romans 14:22-23

You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.

Ecclesiastes 9:7

Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.

Yesterday we talked about not passing judgement on someone because they choose to live differently than we do. Today we are going to dive into some of those choices a bit and explore what it means to choose the lifestyle we want to live as  a follower of Christ.

There are certain things or acts within the Christian community that are deemed sinful or looked down upon. However, many of these things are not sins. We simply get the choice, we choose whether we want to or not. I think two of the biggest subjects I can think of to address this is, drinking, alcohol, and celebrating Halloween. Many Christians believe that drinking alcohol is a sin, while others think is fine to go out and have a cocktail, or stay in in and have some champagne or wine. Now the bible constantly condemns drunkenness, because of what it can lead to. There should be nothing that alters the state of our mind. However it never said that we could not drink, in fact Jesus Himself was at the reception turning water into wine for the people. I understand both sides as being drunk can lead us to act in a way that is not pleasing to God. It’s the same for celebrating holidays like halloween, or going to parties and nightclubs or bars. I think it is less about what you do or where you go but how you do it, and what you do when there. We label things a sin that doesn’t have a church involved, or a Christian name in it. In every moment we are Christians, we don’t get to set our faith aside in order to do things we deem sinful, but we must remember that just because it doesn’t involve us going to church or a Hillsong concert does not mean it’s a sin. We must conduct ourselves as  Christians at all times, now that doesn’t mean you go to a party for the sake of proving that we are down with Jesus or saving every soul the place. No it means, enjoy yourself and having a good time. God wants us to enjoy our life. We put too much weight on what it means to have fun, everything isn’t that deep. Sometimes we are meant just to have a good time. We as Christians have to lighten up a bit.  Choose to live live life to the fullest without feeling like it can’t be done without sinning.  Which leads me to my next point, When you decide that something is right, don’t feel guilty for it and don’t allow anyone make you feel guilty for it.

Let not one make you feel bad for your choices. Follow your convictions, but also if you have to ask if something is right, or try to convince yourself that it is, it probably isn’t. I think many times we as Christians try to explain why we choose to do certain things to other Christians who have chosen not to do them in order to prove our devotion to Jesus. The choices we make are between ourselves and God, we don’t owe an explanation to anyone else. When we learn this simple logic we will live much happier and joyful lives. I believe that many of these reservations and traditions we practice have a lot more to do with how people will view us than they do with how it will affect us spiritually. We are not living for other people, at some points in our lives we have to enjoy it for ourselves, not worrying about what anyone else thinks. At the end of the day, we answer to God and no one else.  

We have to trust ourselves and know that God trusts us as well. I think many times we kind of set up boundaries to keep ourselves from sinning. We live these compact lives in these boxes of comfort that will keep us out of harm's way, keep us from temptation and sin. We are so concerned with not sinning that we forget to live. We live with the fear that we will be a sinful person or are a sinful person for doing certain things. First of all, we’ll never be perfect. Second we cannot cut ourselves off from life because we don’t trust ourselves enough not to sin. We have the Holy Spirit within us, we have to trust those convictions. This is why self-control is one of the fruits of the spirit. Now there is a difference in doing what we know is wrong and having religious reservations. If we know that something is a sin and we ignore every conviction and do said thing anyway than we are sinning.

All this to say, you make the choice on the life you want to live and don’t allow yourself to be guilted for it. Live your best life and enjoy it, you only get one.

Day 221: Unpacking Romans 12- A True Christian

 Romans 12:9-10

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.

We have talked about love and the importance of loving one another. It is our calling as Christians, the second greatest command. One thing I want to talk about today is the importance of doing more than just saying you love someone because that’s what you’re supposed to do as a Christian. For lack of better words, don’t pretend to love people because it makes you look like a better Christian. Don’t talk about how much you love people in order to elevate your status as a Christian. We have to really love people and it shows in the way we treat them, the way we talk to people, and the way we act towards strangers. Love is genuine, we cannot walk around spreading fake love. When we love someone it’s for the other person, when we pretend to love someone it’s for us, and it comes from a selfish place.

I believe that through this passage, God is telling us how to be true Christians. He showing us what it means to be a true Christian by telling to be authentic in our ways. God can see through the fakeness in all of us, He can tell when we are pretending. We know when we’re pretending, and we have to call ourselves out on it. We have to check ourselves, and check our intentions and make sure that the way we are living is genuine. A lot of times, our motives have a lot to do with how we act and ultimately how we treat each other. We have to ask ourselves why we do things sometimes, what our motives are. Are we doing something for someone because we really love them or because it will make us look or feel good. Yes, love feels good it’s an amazing feeling to love and be loved. But we must make sure that we are not showing love to saying we love someone because we are chasing a feeling. It’s not always about that, sometimes we have to set ourselves aside for the sake of someone else. Sometimes (not all the time) we have to set our feelings aside in honor of someone else.

All this to say, let your love be genuine. Don’t choose the image of a good Christian over the authenticity of a true Christian. Meaning being true to your faith and the word of God is so much more important than an image.

Day 219: Recap!

Day 212: Timeless Love 

Today we talked about love and falling in love and how it can seem timeless. We talked about how we learn to love from being loved, by God. We also touched on how we must love ourselves before we love anyone else, and that love is work. We focused on Genesis 29:20 Jeremiah 31:3.

"However, just because we’re falling in love with someone doesn’t mean we stop falling in love with God. God must always come first, always. Nothing and no one should ever come before Him. We must fall in love with Him more and more everyday. It is the only way we will be able to survive and live."

Day 213: Walk Through the Door

Today we talked about taking the opportunity God is providing for us without hesitation. We talked about how we are constantly praying and asking God to open doors for us but when the time comes for us to walk through it for some reason we hesitate. We focused on Matthew 7:7.

"I think sometimes we are so concerned and caught up with “the right thing” that we overlook the right thing. What I mean is that we put so much pressure on ourselves to do what is right that we are blinded by the very idea. We become so infatuated with the idea that we start to overlook the real thing."

Day 214: You're Not a Robot

Today we talked about how we sometimes turn ourselves into Jesus serving robots in order to look like good Christians. We talked about how we often ignore our feelings and impulses because we want to make sure that we look like what a good Christian. We focused on Matthew 16:24, Luke 22:42-44.

"All this to say, when we deny our feelings because of our faith, we are chasing false strength. Meaning we want to look strong because Christians aren’t weak. We put up a facade like everything is okay when we are dying on the inside. Denying our feelings and who we are in order to serve religion only begets more issues and problems within us. Following Christ is not about looking strong or looking like a good Christian. It is about submitting our life to Christ and living a life that follow His plan and purpose.  Embrace your feelings and embrace who you are. Serve God, not religion."

Day 215: Walk With Me

Today we talked about walking with Christ and what that means. We talked about how we are meant to live with God and how it is great to do life with someone else and letting that someone else be Jesus. We focused on Colossians 2:6, Micah 6:8, Genesis 5:24, and Genesis 6:9.

" We are meant to live our lives with God. If we want to do anything in this life and in this world worth something walk with God. When we walk with God he will lead us on a path of glory. He will take us where we need to go to get us where He wants us to be."

Day 216: Walk With Each Other

Today we talked about getting along with one another and doing all we can to walk in harmony with our brothers and sisters. We talked about how even though it is sometimes hard we have to do all we can to live in unity with our neighbors. We focused on Romans 112: 10,18.

"Do what you can to live in harmony with your brothers and sisters. That is not to say that we should not guard our hearts. Guard your heart. Proverbs 4:23, Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Don’t let your love be tainted because of how someone else treats you. Also don’t let your pride get in the way of you trying to get along with others. Don’t just give up on people, try and do all you can."

Day 217: Leah's Perspective

We ended the week where we started, with the same story in Genesis 29, but focusing on a different person. Today we took the time to focus on Leah and put ourselves in her shoes. We talked about how Leah was unloved and overlooked and how we often feel like that more times than not. We also talked about how God sees us when we feel invisible. We also talked about looking for love in all the wrong places and finding it in the one who is love. We focused on Genesis 29:16-35.

"All this to say, God sees you, and He loves you. Don’t look for love in all the wrong places. Even when you feel unwanted or unloved, know that God wants you and He loves you so much. More than you will ever know."

Day 218: Leah's Perspective

Genesis 29:16-35

Now Laban had two daughters. The older daughter was named Leah, and the younger one was Rachel. There was no sparkle in Leah’s eyes, but Rachel had a beautiful figure and a lovely face.  Since Jacob was in love with Rachel, he told her father, “I’ll work for you for seven years if you’ll give me Rachel, your younger daughter, as my wife.” “Agreed!” Laban replied. “I’d rather give her to you than to anyone else. Stay and work with me.”  So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days. Finally, the time came for him to marry her. “I have fulfilled my agreement,” Jacob said to Laban. “Now give me my wife so I can sleep with her.” So Laban invited everyone in the neighborhood and prepared a wedding feast. But that night, when it was dark, Laban took Leah to Jacob, and he slept with her.  (Laban had given Leah a servant, Zilpah, to be her maid.) But when Jacob woke up in the morning—it was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob raged at Laban. “I worked seven years for Rachel! Why have you tricked me?”

“It’s not our custom here to marry off a younger daughter ahead of the firstborn,” Laban replied.  “But wait until the bridal week is over; then we’ll give you Rachel, too—provided you promise to work another seven years for me.” So Jacob agreed to work seven more years. A week after Jacob had married Leah, Laban gave him Rachel, too. (Laban gave Rachel a servant, Bilhah, to be her maid.) So Jacob slept with Rachel, too, and he loved her much more than Leah. He then stayed and worked for Laban the additional seven years. When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to have children, but Rachel could not conceive. So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “The Lord has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me.” She soon became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon, for she said, “The Lord heard that I was unloved and has given me another son.” Then she became pregnant a third time and gave birth to another son. He was named Levi, for she said, “Surely this time my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!”  Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah, for she said, “Now I will praise the Lord!” And then she stopped having children.

Many of us know this story and have heard this story before. We usually talk about Jacob’s willingness to work for Rachel and Rachel’s beauty. We pass Leah off as “the ugly sister”. Rarely do we look at this story from Leah’s perspective, so that’s what we are going to do today. Many of us read this story and we like to think that we are Rachel, but the truth is many of us are Leah. We know what’s it’s like to feel unloved, and we know what it’s like to want someone to love us. Many of us know what it’s like to chase love and do things that will make people love us. I think though many of us have characteristics of Rachel we relate to Leah. Leah has always been overlooked in favor of her younger sister, she was unloved.

Let’s break this down for a minute, her father tricked someone into marrying her. It’s almost like he knew that was the only way someone would marry her. It seems as if he was trying to get her off his hands. Jacob unknowingly sleeps with her. The very next morning he is in a rage because the woman he slept with was not Rachel. It was Leah. ouch! Jacob never looked at her as a wife, never loved her as a wife, or acknowledged her as a wife. Then Laban tells Him, wait until the bridal week is over, then you can have Rachel but you still have to work seven more years for her. Can you imagine how Leah must have felt, how heartbroken and unwanted she felt and was. First her father and then her husband. That must have hurt. Can you relate? I can relate, I grew up being brutally bullied, and one of the things that stuck with me for so many years was being told I was ugly, not just by the girls but the boys too. Also being told that I was the ugly twin. So I can relate to Leah, I know what it’s like, to feel unwanted. They said part is, too many of  us know what this feeling is like.

The story goes on to say that God saw that Leah was unloved. When we think we’re invisible, God sees us. When we think no one loves us God loves us. That’s the beauty of this story, God saw Leah. He did not look at her through the eyes of man, or the way that men have looked at her. In God’s eyes, she was just as beautiful as Rachel, He loved her the same as He did Rachel.

Leah began to look for love in all the wrong places. She thinks that by having a child Jacob would love her. She has three sons and we hear nothing from Jacob, When she has her last son, as pointed out by the website “Today’s Christian”, she decides to praise the Lord, not try to get Jacob to love her, I think this was the moment she decided that God’s love was enough. She had been looking for Jacob to love her for years, and probably her father as well, then she realized that the man who truly loved her was God. And He gave her four sons that would love her unconditionally.

All this to say, God sees you, and He loves you. Don’t look for love in all the wrong places. Even when you feel unwanted or unloved, know that God wants you and He loves you so much. More than you will ever know.

Day 199: If You Love Me...

John 14:15

If you love me, obey my commandments.

Today let’s talk about loving God. I’m not sure if I speak for everyone when I say this, but sometimes I question my love for God because it’s seems like I’m not doing enough to show Him how much I love Him. I often feel like I’m not doing it right. I think I sike myself out because  I want to love God so much and I do, but sometimes I’m just like, but how do you know? Like do you know His love language? Can I brings Him gifts? What is this crazy thing called love?

It’s a crazy concept because I know I love God, yet I question my love for Him. I want to love God perfectly if that makes sense. Loving God seems like such a complicated thing because we want to do it right? We want to make sure we are loving God the right way. We cannot see Him, so there’s no physical connection, which in my opinion is the best kind of love. The type of love that says I’ve never seen your face, but I know you and I love you. I love you just for who you are. That’s some real love.

I think Jesus telling us exactly how to love Him in the above scripture. You want to show me you love me, here’s how you do it, obey my commands. Listen to my voice, turn your heart to my way. That’s how I will know that you love me. I believe the bible is full of formulas telling us the secrets of life. He’s given us another one, quite simple, if you love me obey me. That simple, He doesn’t say anything else, just obey me. Now if we really love God this will not be a problem. Obeying God means giving some things up, sacrificing some things, turning away from our old ways, but if we love God it won’t be a problem. When I would hear this scripture it would be complicated or used to tell us that we are not living right, and tell us that we aren’t loving God the right way or at all. But that is not what I get from this scripture is Jesus telling us how to live. He’s telling us what to do to show Him our love. I do not think that this scripture is in any way berating the believer for not loving God the right way but instead saying, here’s how you live, here’s how you love.  All you have to do is obey me and I will know that you love me. Live how I have taught you to live and I will know that you love me. That’s how you show me.

Loving God is about obeying Him and following His commands. It’s not complicated or hard because like I said before if we really love God, doing whatever needs to be done to obey should be no problem.

Day 194: When It's Too Much

Yesterday we talked not giving any excuses and throwing ourselves a pity party, but if I’m being completely honest, sometimes life seems to throw too much at you at the same time. I might sound like I’m contradicting myself here based on what I wrote yesterday and what today’s subject will be. But the truth is, life contradicts itself, it has ups and downs, flaws and all, but it’s worth living.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Deuteronomy 31:6

“...He will not fail you or forsake you.”

You ever get tired of fighting? You’re not necessarily giving up or losing your faith in God, you’re just tired. Tired of fighting, and exhausted from how long the fight has been. It’s like an in between area, you don’t want to give up, you want to keep going, you’ve come too far to stop, but you just want a break. Just a little break, you want the opponent to ease up a bit so you can breathe and gather your thoughts. It’s a hard place to be in.

Sometimes life is hard, and sometimes we get to the point where we do know if we can keep going. There’s no doubt that we want to keep going but it’s hard, we’re tired, and sore, and exhausted. How do we keep pushing when the harder we push the bigger the battle gets, the more we press, the more pressure is applied. It is tiring.

I am not ashamed to say that life can get tiring and sometimes I just want to walk away and not even try anymore. But it’s in these moments that we have to keep going. We have to keep pushing. God didn’t bring us this far to leave us, and we didn’t come this far to give up. We get to a place where it’s too far to turn back and to close to stop. It’s been a journey of sacrifice, tears, blood, more tears, frustration, and anger but it’s worth it to keep going. My mom would always tell me when I was younger and even now, “the closer you are to the top, the harder it gets.”

All this to say, yes, I know you’re exhausted and it’s tiring, it’s frustrating, and sometime you don’t understand. Trust in God, trust in His plan, trust that He is going to come through for you. He hasn’t failed yet, and I don’t believe that He will start now. Keep going, keep pushing, fight a little harder. Trust me, it will all be worth it. You will reap and it will be glorious. Remember, a diamond is made with extreme amounts of pressure.

Response/Prayer Time

Take the time to talk to God about what we discussed today. Ask God to give you strength and endurance. Whenever you get into the mindset of being tired, you get three and a half minutes, that’s enough time for one sad song and then you get back to it.

Day 192: It's Not That Complicated

Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it.

Ephesians 1:6

Let us praise God for his glorious grace, for the free gift he gave us in his dear Son!

John 1:16

Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another.

I don’t know if you’re one of those people that over thinks and complicates everything, but I am. I am often told that I think too much, I’m making things more complicated than they are, or I’m making a mountain out of a mohill. I’ve even been told by a teacher that I work too hard. I’m the type of person that wants to be sure of everything. I sometimes can’t help it, it’s just in my genes. My grandmother and mom are the same way. However, we sometimes complicate things when they are very simple, there are no catches, no fine lines to walk it just is. Sometimes we can’t accept things when they’re easy or freely given The corruption of this world has conditioned us to think that nothing good comes for free or without a price, that nothing worth having is easy. Yes, sometimes that’s true but not all the time, sometimes God decides to give us a break and sometimes people have good hearts. Many people have good hearts, more than not, we’ve just allowed the few that are rotten corrupt our view of humanity. But what if I told you that Jesus loves us, just because. He just loves us. That’s God’s grace is a free gift, because it is. We did nothing to get it and we can do nothing to take that away. There’s not but… when it come to the love of God, it’s unconditional.

I have never seen love questioned so much than when someone is notified that Jesus loves them. It like worse than the fear of falling in love or saying I love you for the first time. It’s crazy how many circles we go in just to come back to the conclusion that, Jesus loves you. God loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you, And this isn’t some puppy love, it’s real, it’s real love. Like He really loves us. Why do we complicate that? Why can’t we just accept the love and grace God has freely given us. It’s not that hard, it’s not that complicated, there are no strings attached, this love is beautiful, and powerful, and unconditional. The love that God gives us is the type of love each and every one of us are seeking, so why do we question it?

Prayer Time

Talk to God about His love and accepting his love. Asking him to help you be more accepting of His love. Know that He loves you, He loves you so much!

Day 190: It Will All Work Out

Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Never has this scripture spoken to me in a way that it has today. I am in such awe of what God is doing. Today’s devo wasn’t planned, it was going to be something completely different. But God works in spontaneou ways, and I will follow His lead. I’ve read this scripture so many times and thought about it in hard times when things were going bad, and tried to keep my faith. But today was different. I have been going through so much these past couple of weeks, so much! And today as I was reading through scriptures to write about another topic, this one pops up and it was as if God Himself was reading it to me, telling me that it’s all working out. Assuring me that everything is in His hands, he has heard every prayer, and everything is going to be okay. As many times as I’ve said and heard this, today was different, it was as if something broke within me, It was as if every battle had been won, and the victory now sits in my court.

What I want everyone to take from this is, have faith, keep that faith and don’t give up. Give God everything you have, give Him every piece of you and I promise it will all work out. It will be your victory in the end. One day you won’t have to worry or cry about what’s going on in your life. Know that for those who love God, He is always on our side, He’s in our corner and He’s rooting for us. He’s waiting for that right moment to step in and finish the game. Trust God with all of your heart, it’s all going to work out in your favor. I love you.
