Day 362:See It Clearly

Matthew 7:1-5

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Matthew 15:14

Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

Many of us know this verse, it's the staple verse for not judging people. We go to this verse because it tells us that we might be just as bad as the people we are trying to judge. We have to take care of ourselves before we can ever think about taking care of anyone else. While that is the direction we are going in today, I want to look at it from a different perspective. On order for us to lead people on a path of righteousness or lead people anywhere, we must see that path clearly. We must be able to see the path clearly for ourselves but also for the people following us. For the people who are looking at us to help them, we must know what that path looks like. I'm not saying that we must be perfect, I'm saying that before we can lead anyone else we must know the path for ourself. it is a dangerous thing to lead  people blindly. It's a dangerous thing to pretend that we are leading people towards Christ when in fact we are walking towards Christ ourselves. 

As people of God we are called to make disciples to lead people to Christ in any way we can. There is common road we are walking on and that path leads us to Christ. Many people are looking at us as an example of a Christ follower whether we know it or not, and many people are taking the steps we take to get closer to Christ. With that being said, the life we live matters. The way we walk, the way we talk, how we treat people, how we love is like a domino effect we show people the way to Christ. Now if we have the make up of a Christian but we are walking away from Christ, someone who is just coming to their faith or taking an example from our walk with Christ, they will be lead astray. What I'm saying here is to take care of ourselves before we try to take care of anyone else. We must make sure that we are right in our walk before we try to lead anyone else. As rewarding as it is to lead people to Christ, it is more important for us to make sure that we have a solid foundation in Christ before we can lead anyone else. We must make sure that our eyes are clear before we can look into anyone else's. I love the analogy of taking something out of the eye, because if we have something blocking our vision or getting in the way of what we can see, we will not be able to see anything clearly enough in someone else to diagnose it. 

All this to say, we must make sure that we are living a life that is pleasing to God. It is less about trying to live a life that others will want to follow and more about leading a life that God has called us to live. It's not our job to play God, but it i our job to serve and obey Him. When we are living the way God has told us to live, trust me, everything will fall into place.

Day 302: Jesus Doesn't Care About Status

James 2:1-9

My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court?7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

THe scripture above is pretty self explanatory, but it shows the difference between how we as humans think and how God thinks. It shows how we as humans see people versus how God sees His children. The goal is to see people the way God sees them, to see them through a filter of love as opposed to judging them with our eyes. How many times have we judged someone based on their appearance or statue? How many times have we treated someone different because they looked different than us, or came from a different background? Let’s be honest, I am guilty of it, and when I think about I think of how wrong that was. God does not show partiality, He treats us all the same. He loves us all the same, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, it doesn’t matter where you came from, what color your skin is, you are still a child of God. He does not care about our status. Do you think Jesus was thinking about status when He died for us, He died for all of us. HE died for every human being so that we all may have life. He didn’t come for just you or just me, He came for all of us. Every single one of us, that means we are all equal in His eyes, He did not care about our status or our background, He cares about us, His people.

I know many of us have judged people but also many of us have been judged by people and I can tell you it doesn’t feel good to be treated differently because you're not rich enough, you didn’t come from the right neighborhood or your skin isn’t the right color. God made us all equal and He doesn’t love us because of what we have, where we come from, or the color of our skin, He loves us because we are His children, He loves us because He is God and God is love. God’s love is unconditional, and that is how we must learn to love people.

The bible tells us time and time again to love our neighbor as ourselves, but if we are showing partiality, how are we loving our neighbor as ourselves. If we are passing judgements on people based on how they look how are we loving our neighbors like ourselves? We cannot dishonor God’s people and say that we love them at the same time. We do not get to decide if someone is worthy of our love, if we are walking this earth like Christ, everyone is worthy of our love. Everyone deserves to be loved. Loving people is not about us, it is about the other person, people need to know that they are loved. They need to know that beyond their looks, beyond their condition or situation, beyond their past, they are loved. Sometimes we make love selfish, love is the most selfless action their is. Can you imagine how that poor man must have felt when He was treated less important because he wasn’t wearing gold or nice garments? The honest truth is we have been all three people in the story. People make assumptions of who we are based on what they see and we have done the same thing. Let’s stop things cycle and start to walk, live, and love like Christ. When we are full of the Holy Spirit there is no room for anything that is unlike Christ.  

All this to say, if God is not judging anyone, what gives us the right to judge people. Show no partiality.

Prayer Time

Take the time to ask God to search your heart and remove anything that is unlike Him. If you feel the need to repent by all means do so. Then take the time to pray for God’s people, pray that we will be a people that loves beyond what the eyes can see, that we will not judge people but love them.

Day 241: From Within the Body Of Christ

1 Corinthians 5:9-13

When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.

Okay, so this is another passage that when I read it, once again had  me shook, This is the answer to the argument amongst Christians, do we dwell with sinners or not? Although the answer is in the pudding when Jesus himself hung out with nothing but sinners, and people who were considered criminals, and cheaters. However here is a bit of clarification. There’s a few points to go through here so bare with me as we go through all of them. It will have you shaken to your core as well.

Living in a box away from sinners.

Okay so for many of us coming into our faith meant that we began to weed out all of the things in our lives that were not of God. However sometimes as we grow we tend to live in a box. We put ourselves in a box of righteousness. Meaning we only talk to people who are living the same way we are. We isolate or exclude those who do not seem to be living the way we think a Christian should. In other words we isolate ourselves from people we deem sinners as if they are going to contaminate us. If we are firm in our faith and have a solid foundation in Christ, and a relationship with God trust me, the only person who can contaminate that is us. But sometimes we quarantine ourselves as not to be infected by sinners. If we live our lives this way we will be forever alone. But if we truly live our lives like Christ, we will not be afraid to be around sin because our light will shine in the midst of darkness, It’s less about being afraid of being ‘contaminated by sin’ and more about the willingness to use our lives to bring someone out of sin. We cannot isolate ourselves from God’s people, and yes even the sinners are His people, He loves them just as much as He loves you. We cannot forget that at one point we were in their shoes.

Cutting off the wrong people.

When we become Christians we go through a period of cutting people off. Many times that means friends and family who aren’t Christian, or people who we think will drag us down. However, and this is something I have come to realize, we cut off the wrong people. As the scripture says above, “I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.” We are cutting off people who do not live the way we live right now, but no that’s not right. It’s not about us needing them in our lives anymore, we have come to know the truth. We have latched onto the love of God, and have started living our lives like Christ. If we cut the people off who do not do the same immediately, who will be their guide to Christ; it almost as if we are cutting them off from getting in on this beautiful life. We are to be used as vessels by God to bring our friends and family into the same love that we have found in Jesus. We are their example of Jesus. But if we cut them off we end up hurting them because we want to be great.  This happens far too often we kick people to the side because there lives aren’t “worthy” of our presence anymore. If anything, we should pull them closer. We should stay to share what God has done in our lives. We should continue to live for Christ and allow them to see how God is changing us before their eyes. We should become a vessel for them, not another heartbreak or stumbling block.

It is or responsibility to judge

This is the part of the scripture that had me shook. We have talked about how we are not to judge people. How it is not our place. But in this passage we are told, actually, it is your job, our responsibility actually, to judge people, but not in the way that you think. The passage says, “I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.” Pause, Take a breath, and let out a big, BRUH! Basically what it’s saying is, no, it’s not your job to judge people who are not of the faith or professing to be a Christian. But it is your job to judge those who are professing to be Christians yet living and dwelling in sin. #shooketh. I thought to myself after reading this, ‘wait a minute, we’ve been doing this all wrong’. We’ve been judging the wrong people, in the same way that we have been cutting off the wrong people. It was never our job to rebuke those who aren’t Christian for not being Christian. No, it’s the people who know, the ones who have given their lives to Christ yet live the same as those who have never heard of the gospel. Those are the toxic people, the people who know how to live yet choose to disobey. God says, I don’t even want you to eat with such people. We have been preserving the feelings of hypocrites while, hurting the people who have not yet had a chance to come into their faith, because they are condemned before they have even heard.

All this to say, this has to change. It must change, we cannot have a church full of professing christians who are really sinners, taking up the room for the people who really need and want to come to Christ. We cannot let them go unnoticed. There are people reaching for Christ, but because their hands are dirty we smack them down. Yet people in the church or professing Christians hands are just as dirty they're just using Christianity as a mask.

Day 229: Pass No Judgement

Romans 14:1-6

Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. For instance, one person believes it’s alright to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them. Who are you to condemn someone else’s servants? Their own master will judge whether they stand or fall. And with the Lord’s help, they will stand and receive his approval. In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God.

(Today’s devo is the first of three parts. For the next three days we will explore subjects that tie into one another or build on one another. It’s kind of like a mini series.)

The biggest point I want to make today is, do not pass judgement on someone because they live differently than you. Now I’ve seen this quote a multitude of times, however the word ‘live’ is replaced by the word, ‘sin’. But that’s not what I’m talking about today. I want to discuss how we as Christians are so quick to turn our noses up and look down on someone because they live differently than us. We tend to doubt someone’s Christianity because they aren’t living their life, or doing the things we think a Christian should do. We often project our lifestyles onto other people because we think our way is the only way. Maybe they’re more traditional in their faith and maybe they’re more contemporary or modern. Maybe they believe the Sabbath day is on a Saturday instead of a Sunday. Maybe they don’t eat certain things, or participate in certain activities because of their faith. Maybe you do all of these these because of your faith. What I’m getting at here is, it’s not a matter of how, and where, and when. But it’s more a matter of the heart. If we love God with every ounce of our being, and we know in our heart that He is God, and if we have confessed it with our mouths than we are saved. . If we truly live our lives dedicated to Him, then at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

I think sometimes we can get this “holier than thou” attitude, that somehow gives us to right to act superior to our brothers and sisters in Christ. We think that because we don’t live the exact same lifestyle then one of us must be doing it wrong. That is not the case at all, God gave us a choice and even in the will of God, we get to choose the type of lifestyle we want to lead. It’s not a matter of sin or righteousness, it’s just a choice.  Not all of us are going to make the same choices, but who are we to judge someone else because they decide that our life and our lifestyle isn’t for them.

Our generation can relate to this message a lot as millennials make up most of today’s contemporary churches. These churches get quite a bit of slack from the older generations and the more traditional churches. It’s a new type of church, where you don’t have to dress up, or have a traditional choir, there’s not really a pulpit for the clergy to sit on. It’s very unconventional. Different than what many of us grew up with.  However, it works, we may look different, or sound different, but the message is the same. Our worship time may look like a Hillsong United concert with the lights and ripped skinny jeans, but we are still singing about the goodness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our hearts are still near the cross. We profess our love for God. Traditional churches are the complete opposite. But the beautiful thing about it all, no matter what denomination, no matter where it is, how you look, there’s one thing we all have in common, the Good News. Every Christian church is preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ.

I believe Romans 4:17-19 wraps this message up perfectly. For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

All this to say, for lack of better words, don’t be petty. Don’t pass judgement on someone and doubt their devotion to Christ because their life does not look exactly like yours. We as the body of Christ should be lifting each other up, praying for one another every chance we get. That way, there’s no time or room to be petty and judgemental.

Day 224: Unpacking Romans 12- Hospitality

Romans 12:13

When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Hospitality

-the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers.

-the quality or disposition of receiving and treating guests and strangers in a warm, friendly, generous way.

-kindness in welcoming strangers or guests

-receptiveness

According to all the above definitions hospitality is about receptiveness. It’s about welcoming others with a warm spirit. Following the theme of being a true Christian. Hospitality is part of the calling of a christian. The way we treat people, especially those who are strangers to us. It’s all about how we make them feel. The vibe that we give off. It’s easy to get along with the people we know and like, but how do we treat people that we don’t know? This is an interesting question because as humans we are accustomed to comfort. Meaning we have our circles and we have our people that we are most comfortable around, and that’s okay. But how often do we make those that are new feel uncomfortable or unwelcomed? We as Christians make these exclusive circles and people who are “not on our level”, get looked over because we are too busy on our high horse to welcome them with open arms. We may do it without even realizing it, but when it is brought to our attention we must change it.. As Christians is it our job to go out of our way to show hospitality to others. To go out of our way to help those in need. This is something that we must practice as Christians, when it comes showing the love of God. A lot of times the question that come to mind for many people when it comes to loving their neighbor; how can I love someone I don’t even know. We treat them the way Christ would. We accept them with open arms, making them feel welcomed wherever we are, no matter who they or where they came from. There should be no circles or cliques in the body of Christ. Jesus is for everyone, not an exclusive group of people who think of themselves higher than everyone else.

This attitude should be most expressed by the church. I’ve been to far too many churches where I felt unwelcomed and judged. Due to the atmosphere, how people looked at me because of the way I was dressed or how people speak so badly about our generation within the church.. How I was removed from the front row because according to the men in the pulpit my skinny jeans were too tight and I was tempting the young men in the pulpit. Too often the church has turned people away because they don’t agree with their lifestyle or they have labeled them sinners. No one should feel unwanted in god’s house, and if they do, that’s on us.

All this to say, many times we are responsible for how people feel around us. We create the vibes if you will, the atmosphere that either accepts or neglects people.. We must learn to welcome people with open arms and make them feel like they are loved, like they are a part of this beautiful community God has created. We never know what people are going through and one hospitable act from us could literally change the course of someone’s life. We must make sure that people not only feel welcomed in God’s house but know that they are, meaning we speak to them and let them know that they are welcomed. Words are one thing, actions are another, but when you put the two together it is powerful. We are not here to point out people’s sin and flaws. We are here to point people to Jesus. He uncovers the sin and only He can judge them for it.

Day 202: Check Yourself

Romans 2:21-24

Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples? You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it. No wonder the Scriptures say, “The Gentiles blaspheme the name of God because of you.

I’m sure we are all familiar with the statement, “Check yourself before you wreck yourself.” I especially remember my mom saying it to me whenever I was getting out of line. My mom would always tell us when we were younger, “charity starts at home”. Basically what she meant by that was, everything starts with us, before we can talk about anyone or lead anyone else we have to make sure that we have everything in order. I believe that the above scripture points directly to this statement. I think sometimes we can get caught up in what other people are doing that we don’t step back and take a look at ourselves. This is something I’ve seen happen so much in the church, especially towards the younger generation. We are judged for the lifestyle we lead by older people because they don’t approve. Even if we are leading a life dedicated to Christ, many times people will have a problem in they way that we do that as well.

I have been led by people who told me not to do something while they were doing that very thing, and it baffled me once I found out because I found so many of my elders were telling me what to do simply because they were my elders and apparently I’m required to listen to them. But if you are doing the very thing you're telling me not to do, how is that leadership. This is why many times the church is equated with hypocrisy. However I believe that we can change that and the way to do is highlighted in the scriptures. Check yourself before you check anyone else. There’s a couple of other scriptures I want to point to to drive this message home.

Matthew 7:3-5

“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.  

We are in no place to judge, we have to live our lives everyday for ourselves making sure that we are living right. We don’t have time to be judging other people. Yes, we can lead people to Christ and teach them about Christ but first we have to be taught, we have to be led. Many times people become Christians and overnight they turn into someone who all of sudden has the right to point out every sin in someone and let them know that they will be punished by God. I’ve been on both sides of that. We can’t be a Christian for all of two minutes and then think we have so much together that we can start telling other people how to live. We need to learn how to live like Christ first, before we can teach anyone else. We have some specks in our eyes that need to be removed before we can even start to see clearly.

John 8: 7-9

They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”  Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.

This is a familiar passage to many of us, and what amazes me the most is that no one was able to cast a stone. No one but Jesus, who was the only one left standing there. These men were all revved up with stones in hand ready to kill this woman, without realizing that they themselves are in the same position as her. The were all sinners as well. Jesus gave them permission to cast the stone but only if they were without sin. At that moment they had to stop and think. They had to examine themselves and see that they were sinners same as this woman.

How many times have we been ready to throw a stone at someone else without checking ourselves first?

All this to say, check yourself. Make sure that you are living the way you’re supposed to before judging anyone else. In order to make the world a better place and advance God’s kingdom we must start with ourselves.

Day 79: Let's Recap!

It's been a great week, not only did we reach 75 devos, CRAZY!, but we also had a guess writer. Here's a little recap of what went down this week.

Day 72:In the Meantime
We  started the week off talking about patience, waiting on God and what to do while waiting. We focused on Psalms 27:14, 46:10. The two points we made today were: 1. In the meantime, don't jump the gun, and 2. In the meantime, slowdown and enjoy life.
"Don’t miss out on what’s right in front of you because we are too busy to see the blessing before our eyes. Life isn’t always about getting somewhere, it’s about the experiences, and lessons on the way".

Day 73: Where Do We God From Here

Today we talked about jumping, taking a leap of faith. We focused on a few scriptures today: Matthew 7:7, 14:28-31, James 2: 17-18, and Philippians 4:13.

"Sometimes when we feel stuck it means that we have to take a leap of faith to get to where God wants us to go. When we reach the end of a chapter in our lives and don’t know where to go that is where we look to  God for direction, and if He tells us to jump, we have to. If we don’t we will stay in a place where we will be stuck forever. The only way out is to leap, we can’t step we have to jump. Everything we’re looking for, everything we need will be on the other side, leap and watch God allow you to soar. You can do it, put that fear aside, get a running start and JUMP! "

Day 74: Removing What is Dead

Today we talked about dropping the dead weight that is holding us back from reaching our full potential, or keeping us from growing in Christ. We focused on John 15:2.

"Once the dead branches are removed, God continues to prune the healthy branches. Meaning he makes sure that everything dead is cut away, making room for more growth. If we want to grow, if we want the fruit we bear to be good, we have to let go of the dead branches, we have to remove everything from us that is dead. That is the only way we will grow, and be able to make that leap of faith. "

Day 75: This One Thing I Ask

Today we talked about David's desire to be near the Lord all the days of His life. We focused on Psalms 27:4.

"I think David knew, He had a knowledge of what real living looked like. He knew that if He had everything and not God He had nothing at all. But He knew that with God he had everything even if that meant his earthly possessions were bare. God can give us anything we want, and anything we ask, but what would that one thing be. David wanted eternity with the one true King. He wanted to be in the presence of the Lord for all His days. Day 76: Don't Judge Me

Today we had a guest writer, Mrs. Ariana Edgar, she talked about not judging others, and having a nice slice of humble pie. She focused on: James 4:11-12, 1 Timothy 2:11, and Matthew 28:19-20.

" We are not meant to think of ourselves more highly than others or go around pulling out specks in people’s eyes, especially when we have a rotting plank in our own! haha! But as a Christ followers we are supposed to pursue holiness and encourage others to do the same in their journey".

Day 77: Faith Based Living

Today we talked about what it means to live like Christ, and why when we are fully devoted to Christ we do not have to prove our Christianity because our lives speak for themselves.

" If we are not bearing good fruit, where are our roots planted? On what foundation do we stand? We must commit ourselves fully to Christ, and continue to make that choice every single day. Everyday we get up we choose to continue following Christ, we choose to dive into His word. We choose to pray and talk to Him, we choose the soil we are planted in. When we do this, and when we start to grow, the fruit from the tree will speak for itself".
