Day 229: Pass No Judgement

Romans 14:1-6

Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. For instance, one person believes it’s alright to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them. Who are you to condemn someone else’s servants? Their own master will judge whether they stand or fall. And with the Lord’s help, they will stand and receive his approval. In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God.

(Today’s devo is the first of three parts. For the next three days we will explore subjects that tie into one another or build on one another. It’s kind of like a mini series.)

The biggest point I want to make today is, do not pass judgement on someone because they live differently than you. Now I’ve seen this quote a multitude of times, however the word ‘live’ is replaced by the word, ‘sin’. But that’s not what I’m talking about today. I want to discuss how we as Christians are so quick to turn our noses up and look down on someone because they live differently than us. We tend to doubt someone’s Christianity because they aren’t living their life, or doing the things we think a Christian should do. We often project our lifestyles onto other people because we think our way is the only way. Maybe they’re more traditional in their faith and maybe they’re more contemporary or modern. Maybe they believe the Sabbath day is on a Saturday instead of a Sunday. Maybe they don’t eat certain things, or participate in certain activities because of their faith. Maybe you do all of these these because of your faith. What I’m getting at here is, it’s not a matter of how, and where, and when. But it’s more a matter of the heart. If we love God with every ounce of our being, and we know in our heart that He is God, and if we have confessed it with our mouths than we are saved. . If we truly live our lives dedicated to Him, then at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

I think sometimes we can get this “holier than thou” attitude, that somehow gives us to right to act superior to our brothers and sisters in Christ. We think that because we don’t live the exact same lifestyle then one of us must be doing it wrong. That is not the case at all, God gave us a choice and even in the will of God, we get to choose the type of lifestyle we want to lead. It’s not a matter of sin or righteousness, it’s just a choice.  Not all of us are going to make the same choices, but who are we to judge someone else because they decide that our life and our lifestyle isn’t for them.

Our generation can relate to this message a lot as millennials make up most of today’s contemporary churches. These churches get quite a bit of slack from the older generations and the more traditional churches. It’s a new type of church, where you don’t have to dress up, or have a traditional choir, there’s not really a pulpit for the clergy to sit on. It’s very unconventional. Different than what many of us grew up with.  However, it works, we may look different, or sound different, but the message is the same. Our worship time may look like a Hillsong United concert with the lights and ripped skinny jeans, but we are still singing about the goodness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our hearts are still near the cross. We profess our love for God. Traditional churches are the complete opposite. But the beautiful thing about it all, no matter what denomination, no matter where it is, how you look, there’s one thing we all have in common, the Good News. Every Christian church is preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ.

I believe Romans 4:17-19 wraps this message up perfectly. For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

All this to say, for lack of better words, don’t be petty. Don’t pass judgement on someone and doubt their devotion to Christ because their life does not look exactly like yours. We as the body of Christ should be lifting each other up, praying for one another every chance we get. That way, there’s no time or room to be petty and judgemental.

Day 209: Patiently Waiting (It's Coming)

Romans 8:25

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Patience- an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay:

One thing that I can easily admit is, I am not always the most patient person. I don’t like waiting, especially when I feel like there is no need to. one of the reasons I hate traffic. Like I hate it, it makes me so angry, especially when I need to get somewhere. I especially despise it when the traffic is unnecessary, for example one lane is closed due to an accident and everyone wants to stop and look at the accident instead of going on about their business. It makes my blood boil. I just don’t like waiting, I will but I won’t like or enjoy it. This is where we learn the difference between just waiting and being patient.

This is one of the things God has taught me over the years, patience. Not everything will move in my timing and I have to be okay with that. I have learned that sometimes I will have to sit through some traffic before I get to where I need to go, and by the time I get there, everything will be right.  Everything will fall into place because God’s timing is perfect. I’ve learned that sitting through the traffic is what teaches me patience. Sometimes the things we want take a bit more time, some prayers get answered quicker than others and I the only reason that I can give you is, God’s timing is perfect. Many times God does things to teach us, to help us grow. I believe that when we are waiting it is teaching us a lesson in patience. It’s teaching not only to wait but to wait in good faith, wait with integrity, wait with smile on our face.

Sometimes we can get impatient with God. We get tired of praying because we don’t see anything happening. We often dismiss the fact that we will not always know what God is up to but He is in fact up to something. We just have to have faith in Him, and trust in His word and His timing, because I am not over exaggerating when I say, His timing is perfect.  When we ask God for something we have wait for it. Sometimes we view God as genie. Like all we have to do is pray or fast for a day or two and then we will have everything we ever wanted or needed. God will answer our prayers, and He will give us what we ask for but it’s all in His timing. It’s not always an immediate thing, like we close our eyes and poof everything that we’ve been praying for will be right there in front of us. No there’s some waiting involved, the scripture above tells us so, when we pray for things we don’t have we wait for it patiently. The keyword right there is patience. Everything we need and want, it’s coming we just have to wait patiently for it.

All this to say, don’t get impatient with God, trust in His timing. Trust that everything is coming together and working out we just have to be patient and trust Him. One of the fruits of the spirit is patience, I believe that this is a trait we all must posses because in life there we be a lot of waiting. We must learn to wait with dignity. I know it’s hard especially when we stand in desperate need and we are praying to God with everything and in desperation, but even in those moments, trust His timing.

Also, don’t get impatient with yourself. At our age we often come down on ourselves for not being where we want to be in life. Have patience, not everything will go according to plan but God is in control. God knows where you are and where you will be. Trust me, where you are is exactly where God wants you to be.

Day 169: If This is God

Acts 5:33-42

When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40 and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. 42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.

Prior to this, Peter and the apostles had been arrested for preaching the gospel. The Sadducees were jealous so they decided to throw them in jail. Then God broke them out and told them to go to the temple to speak there to the people. After this the high priest and all of his people found them at the temple and not in prison, where they had last saw them. Then the captain and the officers went and seized them, not by force though because they were afraid the people would stone them if they did so. Then they gave them a strict warning not to preach in the name of Jesus or spread the message of Christ. Peter and the apostles said, they couldn’t do that. They were like “we have to obey God’s word over yours, so no, that’s not going to happen.’ And that’s how we ended up where we are.

The council wanted to kill the apostles for not bowing out and listening to what they told them. Jealousy was a motive in all of this, and it shows just how dangerous jealousy is or can be. But there was this man named Gamaliel, oh Gamaliel, interrupted those plans and told them if they did anything to these men they might end up opposing God. Now it is important to note, these men were not fans of Jesus but they loved God and lived for the Torah. They were very religious men.  In his speech, Gamaliel brought people two people to their attention, Theudas and Judas the Galilean. Both of these men were rebels and led revolts, and once their revolts ended or were interrupted or when the men died nothing was ever heard of them or their followers. However, this was not the case with Jesus and His followers. They actually multiplied when Jesus ascended into heaven. Jesus died but He was only dead for three days, He was resurrected and ascended into  heaven forty days after that. He prepared the disciples for what was to come. Jesus left behind the Holy Spirit so that they could continue to walk and talk like Him, and go on healing and doing wonders and preaching the Gospel to His people. Gamaliel pointed out the obvious, that if these men are really of God they cannot be stopped. If this is God, there’s nothing you can do that will succeed against them. No matter what the men tried to do they would fail. There was nothing they could do to stop the word of God from being spread throughout all the nations. In fact whenever they tried, all the men of God did was scatter, and therefore the message of Christ scattered over all the land, even to the foreign places.

The first chapters of Acts are some of my favorite in the entire book. It was the beginning of the church and we see firsthand how God used even the opposers and oppressors to spread the word of God. Even when they tried to stop it, all it did was multiply. The beauty of this passage is that it’s great to know that their are some things that can’t be tainted or corrupted. There are some things that can’t be moved no matter how hard they try. That thing is the word of God, no matter what comes up against it, no matter how hard people fight it, the word of God has always been proven to be true. There is something and someone that we can trust in that is untouchable. That is a beautiful thing. We live in a very corruptible world, where everything including humanity can be tainted. It’s wonderful to trust in or have faith in something that can’t be corrupted even in a world full of corruption. Something that never changes, and had stayed the same and stayed faithful for centuries and will remain the same. In a world that is constantly changing it’s nice to know that one thing is constant, and that is God and His word.

Response/Prayer Time

Take the time to see the wonder of God’s faithful word. Thank God for giving us faith in something that no matter what happens cannot be debauched. Just spend time with Him and thank Him for His magnificent love and glorious word.

Day 125: Let's Not Jump to Conclusions

I’m pretty sure we all have that one friend or family member that could win the gold medal for jumping to conclusions. Even when it’s out of nowhere, and over the smallest things. We all know that one person that makes a big deal out of nothing, and complicates life more than it has to be. We all know this person, and if you don’t know this person...you most likely are this person 😁. I think we have all been in this place in our life, and are probably still going through it. I know me personally, I can be the queen of jumping to conclusions, I can jump to a conclusion faster than a from leaps through lily pads.

Today I want to talk about how we sometimes do this in our relationships with God. We think we know how the story is going to end or what will happen because we got a small taste of something. when we really have no idea.

Proverbs 28:5

Don't jump to conclusions - there may be a perfectly good explanation for what you just saw.

You ever see or hear something, and automatically come up with some type of conclusion as a reflection of what you just witnessed.  Like an argument over text, you read a text message, you can’t really know the tone of it, because it's a text message, but you create it in your head. Thus leading to an argument over assumption. Parents jump to conclusions when children are being nice and doing things we weren’t asked to do, like cleaning. They assume that we must want something. Most of the time we do but that's not the point right now. They assume before they know, but we still love them. 👅😂 My point is we have all done it, and many of us still do.

Genesis 12: 10-20

Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance,12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” 14 When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. 17 But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

Now here is a story of what can happen when you jump to conclusions too quickly. Abram probably won a lot of brownie points with his wife for this one. He told her she was so beautiful that other men might kill him in order to have her. So he came up with the plan to say they were siblings. When Pharaoh finds out he angrily sends them away. Abram could have just said, this is my wife and not been kicked out by Pharaoh. Pharaoh obviously was grieved that he almost had another man's wife. Jumping to conclusions got them both kicked out. 

Sometimes we do this to the people in our lives who mean well and even to God. We assume the worst when, if we just take the time to understand what is going on it might not be that bad. You ever concluded that God wasn’t listening or didn’t care because you did not get an immediate response, or something did not work out the way you planned. I know I have. Sometimes it’s unintentional, there’s this whole “if this, then that" theory. If God doesn’t do this by this time, then He must not want me to have it. Or if God doesn't answer, when I want Him to, then He must not be listening. That is not always the case, God is working on us, and His timing is perfect, and sometimes at the onset of trouble we assume we know how this story is going to end. Sometimes we come to the conclusion that God is punishing us for something we did wrong. God can be preparing us for a blessing or preparing us for something He is about to do in our lives but because we are so quick to jump the gun and assume, we end up standing there with our mouths open in shock when we realize what He is really doing. We can’t jump to the end before we take the journey. Sometimes the end we see is just a mountain blocking the finish line.

We also do it to other people, as Abram did to Pharaoh, and all the men of Egypt. We assume we know something about people because of what we see or feel. Abram did not give the men of Egypt a chance before coming to the conclusion that they would kill him for his wife. How many times have we done this to someone, rather it be someone we know well, or not that much? It happens a lot in relationships and friendships. The moment something doesn’t go as we think it should we assume the worst. We pull away when we think our relationships are going south. Without first taking the time to suss through what is actually going on. It may not be what we think.

Have you ever been in a position where someone assumed that you were leading a life of sin because they haven’t seen you at church in a while? Or because you are “acting different”? Or have we done it to someone else? We cannot assume we know what’s going on in someone’s life if we never talk to them. We cannot assume we know what God is doing if we only go to him when we need something.

Moral of the story, our minds can sometimes deceive us, it’s a human flaw. But we do not have to act on the conclusions we jump to. Make sure we know the full story before we assume. We might realize that we were wrong.

Day 124: No One Compares

Psalms 89:6-7

For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.

It is safe to say that there is no one who can compare to God, no one on heaven or earth. There’s no one who can get to the level of competing with God because no one is near comparison with Him. No one is heaven and no one on earth can compare to who God is. The scriptures say the highest angelic powers stand in awe of Him. There is no one nowhere like Him, God just is. He is the only person in the universe who can do the things He does. God is the only being who exist outside of time, no one else can say that about themselves. That is why eternity is in His hands because He was before anything else, including time. That is mind blowing.

I just have a couple of questions seeing that we know that there is nobody or nothing that compares to God. Why do we act like there are things that can compare to the goodness of God? What I mean by that is sometimes we use God as a last resort like He couldn’t give us what we needed had we gone to Him first. Sometimes we allow our circumstances to change how we view God, and that is a very human thing to do, but can we try putting our faith in God first. We have to learn to trust Him first not when we are all out of options. God should always be the one we go to first. It is better to put our faith in God while floating in a sea of opportunity than to wait until we have hit rock bottom. There are multiple reasons why we say no one compares to God, every person can name at least three reasons if not more.We make these blanket statements all the time but when all's said and done and everything is on the line do we really believe it? What I mean by that is, why do we put things in the place of God if no one compares to Him. Why do we look for validation in so many places when God is standing right there? I can speak for myself and say that sometimes I act like God is not enough, sometimes I act like there are things and people who are better than God, who can help me more. Because sometimes, and I’m being honest, I don’t want to pray or read my bible I’d rather talk to my friends who will be there physically. And every time I come out realizing that I should have gone to God first, I took a detour when there was no reason to. We have to realize the magnitude of this statement when we say so, no one compares. It’s like saying no one compares to Whitney Houston’s singing, or Muhammad Ali’s boxing, or Viola Davis’s acting. When we make those statements we are initially saying that they are untouchable in their field they are so great that there is no one that is could be equal to them.  

That is exactly what we mean when we say that there is no one who compares to God, not even the highest king in all the universe, not even the pope compares to God. No one, there is no one that can be equal to such a great being.

There is no one love that compares to God, no grace that compares. There is no one quite like God.

As Christians, we live to push to live our lives like Christ and love like God, and as close as we get to it, we don’t even compare. That is why He is God, we will never surpass who He is, which is why we are forever serving Him.

Day 99: God Brought Me This Far...

Philippians 1:6

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

God is faithful, this is a fact and it is something we have come to know and learn through experience. We know that everything God starts He will finish, we know that He will see us through whatever it is we are going through. He guides us through this crazy yet beautiful life. As Paul says, ‘I am sure of this..’ God doesn’t start something that He won’t finish, that’s not how He works. We know that He will complete every good work He has started in us, in this nation, in the world. It will all be completed, and His promises will be fulfilled.

1 Timothy 6:6

But Godliness with contentment is great gain.

A lot of times I thank God for where He is taking me. Especially when I feel the pressure to worry about how my life will turn out and how it will all work out. I find myself saying all the time, “God got me here, He will take me all the way.” “He didn’t bring me this far to leave me.” I say these words as a declaration of faith and trust in my Lord and Savior. I say that out of pure belief knowing that if He did it before He can do it again. Knowing that He holds to His word and it will be fulfilled in my life. While this is beautiful and something that I will stand on all the days of my life, I believe that something changed in me when I learned how to be thankful for where I am in this present moment. When I took my eyes off of where I’m going and focused on where I am. I had to learn to thank God for the present as much, if not more than I thank Him for my future. I had to learn to have faith in where God is taking me but also being content with where I am. Because He brought me this far. God brought me here for a reason and I’m not just passing through, I am here. I think our generation believes that we can't be happy until we are where we want to be. We base our happiness on our “success” We aren’t content with the present, we are constantly moving and rushing towards the future because that’s where we want to be, and we miss the adventures and the beauty of where we are. If we are constantly running for the future and what is ahead of us, we will never have time to stop and enjoy the present because we are constantly moving. It won’t allow us to stop, because at one point the past and the present were the future, and if we keep rushing through them because we want something more, we will miss what God is doing right in front of our eyes. We must understand that God has us here for a reason. This might be a stepping stone to where He is taking us but it matters just as much as the destination. The future is bright the destination is beautiful but can we be happy with where we are before we get there? Can we be faithful with the little things, and appreciate the little steps?

Day 77: Don't Judge Me by Ariana Edgar

Today we have a guess writer, my Pastor and friend Ariana Edgar (pictured below). She and her husband Matt Edgar (also pictured below) lead Story Philly a church in Center City Philadelphia and just expanded to University City. If you are ever in Philadelphia stop by on Sunday evenings at 6 and 7:30pm.

How many times have we heard people say that sentence? And to be honest, I think a lot of times people use this sentence as a cop-out to live the way they want to live instead of living up to the Godly standard set before us. BUT there is some truth that rings to this catchy phrase.

A massive lesson that God has been teaching me lately is that He is the the ultimate judge… not us.

My husband and I started a church in Center City, Philly almost two years ago. And it is absolutely my favorite thing to do! For me #SundayFunday is the highlight of my week! I love building a flourishing community of people who come together and worship Jesus. I love that our church is such a relaxed, fun and welcoming place to be. All types of people come through our doors and hopefully leave experiencing the love of God.

My role in church, and as a general Christ follower, is to lead others to Christ in every way. Whether that’s leading a team, preaching a message, or doing one-on-one discipleship, I am always pointing people to Christ.

And as I develop, grow and mature in my relationship with God I am understanding more and more that I am undeniably fallible, will mess up, and will make mistakes.

I use to think that I understood God’s ways pretty well and that I was an A+ christian. Meaning I had it all together all the time; that there was no way I could mess up that bad as "So n’ So". I would think differently of "Blahsy Blah" because they’re so proud and they have no clue how wrong they are.

But I AM HUMAN and STILL MESS UP. And the saying is SO TRUE that pride comes before a fall. Even this past month I had to eat a big fat piece of humble pie and it shocked me right back to realizing that I am always, and WILL always be in need of a Savior. And that I can’t afford to hold on to any pride in my words, mind or heart.

So here’s the thing, it says in James 4: 11-12 >>>>

"Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?”

So heeeeyyooooo!! We are not meant to think of ourselves more highly than others or go around pulling out specks in people’s eyes, especially when we have a rotting plank in our own! haha! But as a Christ followers we are supposed to pursue holiness and encourage others to do the same in their journey.

As a Christ follower & leader (p.s. if you are Christian then you are automatically a leader ) we are meant to do this >>>

1 Timothy 2:11

"I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior."

Ariana translation: Go to God in prayer for everyone that’s on your heart. Be a source of encouragement to everyone around you. And live an upright life making sure that even the little toxins in your life are handed over to God immediately.

And this >>>

Matthew 28:19-20

"Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Ariana translation: Your purpose on earth is to show people the love of Christ, have as many people as you can come to know Him, and have them walk the journey with you, pursuing perfection, until you go home to be with the Father in heaven.

Let’s be people who are constantly renewing our minds in the Word of God, who are seeing Christ as the ultimate example of how to live life on earth, and who encourage NOT judge each other to do the same. Keep yourself humble and know that God always has your back.

Guys... humble pie actually tastes sweet, so eat up!!
