Day 179: #LoveYourself Part 2

Mark 12:31

The second is this: ‘You should love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.

Ephesians 5:29

For no one has ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, as the Messiah does the church.

Psalms 139:14

I will give thanks to you because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this.

Today we are taking it all the way back to the beginning, 171 days ago, but who's counting. On day seven of the devotional we started a little series on self love and this specific day was about loving yourself. I’m going to bring that theme back today and talk about loving the person you are from the inside, but also loving who you are on the outside. Being comfortable in your own skin and loving the person you are and not trying to shape and mould yourself into something or someone you think you should be. The goal of today is for us to be comfortable with who we are, and see that we are beautifully and wonderfully made.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in my twenty four years of living is to love myself and be comfortable with who I am. I spent so much time trying to change who I was an hating myself and not being comfortable in my own skin that I didn’t know what it meant to actually love myself. I didn’t know how to appreciate the body, the hair, the skin tone, the looks, the personality, or the gifts that God gave me. This as a result of me being bullied and blaming myself for being bullied. I hated who I was at a very young age, so I grew up very insecure, I hated my appearance, I hated my skin color, my hair, my height, everything about me I hated. But I loved acting because it gave me a chance to be someone else, that I could possibly fall in love with. Over the years as I’ve grown closer to God and closer to myself (I know that sounds weird but bear with me), I’ve learned that God made me who I am on purpose, He gave me this beautiful dark skin on purpose, this kinky-curly hair, that was on purpose too. My short stature, He gave that to me too. He created me in His image, in His hands, and I thank Him for that. I thank Him for showing me how to love who I am.

I believe that as people we are meant to love ourselves, if we don’t we cannot learn to love anyone else. As we pointed out in Day 7, Jesus tells us to love our neighbor as we love ourself. Now call me crazy but i think that there is a demand in there to love ourselves. Jesus doesn’t say things on accident, and we tend to overlook the part that says “...As yourself”. But once we truly love ourselves we will be able to spread that love and pour it onto others. My mom used to always say, “hurt people, hurt people” meaning we tend to throw our own insecurities and our own heartache and pain on others. We project ourselves onto other people. How we treat ourselves is often how we treat others. So just imagine, if we are loving ourselves and feeling confident and beautiful, and good about the skin we are in. Thankful for who we are, and the life we live. How do you think we are going to treat others?

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” and Mark Twain said, “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”

We call the shots, we are responsible for our own happiness, we are responsible for loving ourselves. I am going to say that loving yourself is a human responsibility. We are not always going to get compliments but that doesn’t mean we are not beautiful and handsome. One of things I pray is that God will help me to do is, be comfortable in my own skin. He has given us freedom and a life to live abundantly, the only one who can limit that is us. We have to learn to accept and love every part about us, the weird parts, the crazy parts, the parts that others will hate. Life is about freedom, live freely and be yourself. I truly believe that God gave us all different personalities, He gave us all different looks, shapes, and sizes and He loves it. We are all a melting pot of diversity, we don’t look the same, or act the same. How boring would that be. So let’s love ourselves, Be comfortable with who we are and who God made us to be.

Reflection

3. List everything you love about yourself, and remind yourself everyday that you are beautiful or you are handsome, and you are who God made you to be.

Day 162: YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Psalms 139:13-14

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Something we don’t hear enough is, “you’re beautiful” or “You’re handsome”. I think as the church we tend to neglect the idea of self-esteem when it comes to beauty. We tend to beat around the bush when it comes to caring about our physical appearance. We as Christian are very focused on what’s on the inside, we don’t really focus on physical appearance. It’s more about what our heart looks like. While that is great and I do not want to discredit that in any way, I believe that it is important for people to be complimented. I feel that it is important for us as Christians to have confidence. I believe that we should be able to see ourselves as beautiful and not be accused of arrogance or cockiness.

God formed the innermost parts of us but He also formed the outermost parts of us. We were created by the greatest artist there is, was, and will be. We are the greatest work of His hands, made in His image. If that’s not beautiful I don’t know what is. I talk about this because I truly believe that we are beautiful people and we must believe that. It’s something that many people especially people in our generation suffer with. You’re beautiful, don’t let anyone tell you it’s just on the inside.

One of my favorite movies and musicals is The Color Purple. It’s a beautiful story, and a piece of the plot is a woman finding her own beauty and learning to own that. There is a point in the story where she can’t even look in the mirror for more than two seconds. She doesn’t see herself as beautiful because she has been told over and over that she was ugly. She has been beaten down all her life and eventually, she starts to believe it. I tell this story because there are too many people especially within the body of Christ, as I stated above, walking around with low self-esteem. There are too many people out there who don’t believe that they are beautiful. I’m talking about the men too, especially men, they get overlooked too often. We all need to hear it at one point or another. It’s one thing to think but ti believes it is different. I grew up being bullied really bad, I was called ugly every day for years and I heard that word so much that I eventually started to believe it. This is why hearing it is important.

I feel like a lot of people are opposed to Christians being attractive, especially if they’re pastors. Like, people are really shocked when they see a pastor who is attractive. It’s interesting like it’s almost a sin in the world for a Christ follower to be hot. Our beauty isn’t just on the inside, we are human just like the next person, and there is nothing wrong with being told you’re beautiful, feeling beautiful, or wanting to be told you’re beautiful.

Back to the story of the color purple. In the musical at one point the actress playing the lead sings a song, and in the middle of that songs she looks out into the audience and says, “I’m beautiful”, not once but twice. The actress Cynthia Erivo who plays the role talks about this moment in the play. She discusses how we need to hear this statement more often and how we do not hear it enough. I believe that we are fearfully and wonderfully made and we have to believe that to be true in every part of our lives.

All this to say, have confidence, know that you are beautiful. Start to see yourself as more than just a beautiful person on the inside but know that God has made you and there you are the most beautiful thing ever. You’re beautiful on the inside but you’re also beautiful on the outside. Believe that.

Reflection

Take the time today to look in the mirror and say, I’m “beautiful” or ‘I’m handsome”, gorgeous, pretty, stunning, cute, whatever word you choose. Then compliment someone, make someone feel good about themselves today and every day following.

Prayer Time

Take the time to pray that God boosts the confidence of His people. Have a conversation with Him about what we talked about today.

Day 142: Recap (ICYMI)

Day 135: Independent or Full of Pride

Today we talked about the difference between wanting to be independent or being full of pride. How we sometimes focus more on boasting and bragging than actually being independent. We focused on Proverbs 29:23 and 2 Chronicles 26:16

"If we really want to be independent we will put our pride aside and know that independence is not all about self. It is not about being able to brag and boast about how well we do on our own. "

Day 136: How Are You?

Today we talked about checking in with ourselves. We talked about how we never really consider how we are doing when asked, we just say fine, good, or okay, even when we are broken on the inside. We focused on Ecclesiastes 3:4.

"We neglect ourselves too often, sometimes we have to sit back and consider how we are actually doing. What’s going on inside us, check in on our soul, see how everything is going. "

Day 137: Is it Worth It?

Today we talked about how, even though we may have everything we every dreamed of, if we lose our soul none of it will be worth it. We focused on Mark 8:36 and Matthew 4:8-11.

"Our soul is the very essence of who we are, it’s our heart, it’s everything that makes us, us. If we lose that what do we have? Who are we?  "

Day 138: Representing the Cross

Today we talked about how our lifestyle should point to Christ. We talked about being ambassadors for Christ and representatives of His kingdom. We focused on 2 Corinthians 5:20.

"As Christians, we are meant to live a life that points towards Christ. We are to live our lives as Jesus lived His. "

Day 139: The Great Commission

Today we talked about the great commission and how God sends us on a mission to spread HIs word and lead people to Him. We focused on Matthew 28:16-20.

"We don’t have to be pastors and preachers to lead people to Christ. As we pointed out yesterday, the life we live should point to Christ. "

Day 140: Selfless Nature

Today we talked about being selfless and being able to put others before ourselves. We focused on Philippians 2:3-4.

"We must come to the realization that there are things and people that are more important that our concerns. There are more people out there besides ourselves. We must live is a world where we take a stand for one another, where we are concerned about one another. "

Day 15: Loving People

I’m pretty sure we can all agree that love is not only beautiful but powerful. Love is more powerful than anger, pain, and definitely more powerful than hate. Love is a necessity and a want. I love talking about love because I just love. love. Since I’ve become a christian my desire to love people has gotten stronger. I find myself in positions all the time where I can’t help myself, I love you. I can’t hold grudges, it doesn’t sit right with me to stay angry, or waste my time hating people. I’m just a sappy love ball, i can’t help it and I love it. I’ve found that since I’ve experienced the love of God and understood what it means to be loved by God, I want everyone to feel this type of love, so why not give it to them?

We all  deserve love, and I’m not talking about love in a romantic way, (we will get to that subject later in the year I promise). No matter who  you are, what you look like, what your social or financial status is,  where you came from, what you’ve done in your life. You deserve to be loved, unconditionally. Love doesn’t give up or end. Loving someone unconditionally means no matter what happens, there is nothing someone can do to make us stop loving them. That’s how God loves us, He never stops loving us, There’s nothing we can do to make Him love us less. He can’t help Himself, he loves us, even before we loved Him. Some people will never love God but He still loves them. It’s the same with loving people, sometimes we have to love people even though we know they will never love us back. That’s unconditional love, loving even though we know it will never be reciprocated. We don’t love just the people who love us, we love everyone. In the same way Jesus loved everyone He came across, it did not matter if they were Jews, Gentiles, Samaritans, tax collectors, thieves, murderers. Whoever they were Jesus came to save them as well. He went into the homes of people who were considered criminals and outcast. Jesus love is unconditional to all people, and therefore as we live like Christ we shall also love like Christ.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

Mark 2:1-12

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”  And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

This passage is one of my favorites, and not for the obvious reasons. I want to focus on the four men in this story. These four men were the reason the man who was paralyzed received healing. They went out of their way to make sure this man got to Jesus.  The could have left Him there when they got in the first time and said “we tried.”shrugged and walked away. Instead the did something so loving that Jesus had to honor their faith in the situation. These four men were carrying a paralyzed man on a bed, and when they could not get in through the door they went to the roof. When they got to the roof they put a hole in it, as hole big enough so that the man could fit through it. Then it says they ‘let down the bed.’ they didn’t drop it, they let it down, gently, making sure that he was safe. I’m not sure how long it took for the men to do all of this, but all I know is that they saw a need and met it. They knew that this man could not get to Jesus alone, so they took him. They went through all that trouble because they knew Jesus would heal him, they had faith that He could and would be healed.

Sometimes loving people is having faith for them. Sometimes we have to go out of our way for people, not because it makes us look like a good person but because we are here serve and love others. Sometimes love means sacrifice, we have to put ourselves on the line for others. We have to love people who we don’t agree with, we have to love the people we don’t want to be around all the time, we have to love the people who do us wrong and hurt us. Loving people isn't always pretty, but it is so much better than carrying around the burden of hate.  

1 John 4:20

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

How can we hate our neighbor who we see everyday, and profess to love God, whom we have never seen. Loving people is more that just a phrase, it’s a verb,an action word. We are always so quick to say, “I love you because I have to.” But just like anything else love is a choice. God chooses to love us, even when we give Him reason not to. We must simply choose love over hate, we must choose to love people, even when the make loving them the hardest challenge of life (so dramatic, I know). I know that some people are hard to love, but just imagine how hard we are to love, and how we still receive love unconditionally. We were all hard to love at one point in our lives. Not only do we deserve love, and want love, we need love. The worst feeling in the world into feel like no one loves you. We go through stages in our lives sometimes where we feel like everyone hates us, or that we have been cut off from the world. We need love, we need to know that someone will always be there, that in our lowest points. We need to know that no matter what we do we will always be loved. If we know that, that is what we need as human beings then we should be giving that love to our neighbors.

Mark 12:31

The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The second greatest commandment is to love our neighbors as ourselves, the first is loving God with our heart, mind, and soul. As Christians our entire foundation is built on love. We talked earlier about loving ourselves, and we love ourselves so much, more than we'll ever know or admit. What if we take all the love we give ourselves and shower someone else with it. We learn to treat others well because we know how we want to be treated. We learn to love others because we know how we are and how we want to be loved.

If we do not love as Christians, can we truly call ourselves Christian? As I mentioned earlier some people are hard to love, some people cannot accept love, some people just are not loving. The way we love people should never be impacted by the way they love others, or the way they accept or refuse love. When you love someone, there is nothing they can do about it. When you love someone you cannot control it, you love them rather you agree with them or not, whether you get along with them all the time or not, you just love them. The same way God loves us, is the same type of love  we should have towards His people. We must learn how to love people with no strings attached, no conditions, no forfeiting, none of that. I love you, end of story and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Prayer Time

Respond to God, and talk to HIm about what it means to love His people. Ask God to help you see others through His eyes. Love on as many people as you can. Ask God to show you how to love unconditionally. Remember that prayer is just a conversation between you and God.

Day 12: Purpose

Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is the meaning of my existence? Is there a reason? Why am I the person I am?

Questions we have all asked ourselves and probably still ask ourselves. In order to answer those questions we have to look past the shields on our eyes. We have to look past, what our purpose will lead to. We have to look past the success it will bring, the wealth, and what we can get out of it. It’s so much deeper than that. There is a reason behind everything we do, there is always a motive, whether we admit it or not. We don’t just walk for the sake of walking or speak for the sake of speaking. There’s always a reason rather big or small, it's still a reason. So what’s the reason for our existence? What are we here for?

Isaiah 43:7

Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

The answer to those questions are right there in the scripture, we are created for the glory of God. We glorify God by living in relationship with Him, being faithful and committed to Him. God made us in His image, therefore we cannot fulfill our purpose apart from Him.

It’s easy to get lost in trying to find our purpose. We often go looking for meaning in our lives, and once we think we’ve found it, it seems to slip away from us. We can sometimes get lost in the complexity of life and forget about the simple things. We often confuse our goals with our purpose, we all have that one big dream that we want to reach, and once we get there we will have fulfilled our life’s purpose. But that’s not the case at all, it’s the reason behind what we do. What is our motive? If our very existence is to glorify God, everything we do will point to Him. The way we live, the way we treat others, how we carry ourselves, it all points to God. We will use our gifts to honor Him. We use what He’s given us, to bring Him glory. This doesn’t mean that you will be a pastor, or a worship leader, or work in the church.  Wherever God has you, whether you’re an artist, a doctor, lawyer, business person, scientist, engineer, musician, mathematician, teacher, pastor, worship leader, singer, etc. Whatever you do, do it to glory of God. When we are in a relationship with God and our foundation is in Him, our hearts are in the right place. Everything we do we do because we want to honor God. Our motives change, our outlook, and our perspective changes. We now have a reason to do what we do and we give it our all because we want to give God the best.

I always thought that glorifying God meant that I had to give up my passions, and dreams, to be a minister. I was under the impression that I had to drop everything and live in the church. I thought that I could not be a Christian and an actress at the same time. I realized that God gave me the gift of acting, He gave me the ability to entertain His people, and I will use it because He gave it to me. I will use it to glorify Him.  I was constantly trying to find a way to glorify God in everything I did. Trying to force my faith into every part of my life.  I realized that when I started to live in relationship with him I did not have to force my faith into my work. It is who I am, it is the life I live, so it shines through no matter what I am doing. Because Christ is my life, I can do nothing outside of Him.

You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

John 15:5

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Reflection

1. Does your life glorify God?
2. In what ways can you use the gifts God has given you to glorify Him?

Prayer Time

Just respond to God in prayer. Stripping away all the distractions. Reread the scriptures, and tell God what is on your heart. Remember that this is a conversation between you and God, be honest with Him.

Day 11: Following God's Direction

What does it mean to take direction from God? In our twenties, we know right from wrong. We know what we should be doing and what we should not be doing. However, as we start to gain independence, we tend to get very hardheaded. We start to stray from the direction we have been given and try to take our own route. The main ages being 18 and 21. I've been both of these ages, and they haven't been my best years. The moment I felt like I could take care of myself, I stopped listening to my parents, moved out, and attempted to start my own life. It didn't go too well because I ended up back at home, with my mother being nice enough not to say "I told you so." Today I want to talk about how we sometimes declare independence from God and end up right back where we started, because he was right all along.

Yesterday we talked about believing in God as opposed to ourselves and trusting Him. Today we are going to touch on some similar themes.

Luke 15:11-24

And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.  And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger!  I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

The story of the prodigal or lost son is one of the more popular stories in the bible. If you grew up in church, you know this story back and forth.

Here we have a young heir, who was due to receive his inheritance upon his father’s death. But instead of waiting he goes to his father and demands he get what is owed to him. I guess he got tired of waiting for his father to die and requested his inheritance early. Whatever prompted him to do this, he decided to do as he pleased, and in the end realized how big of a mistake it was. He did not realize how far off he had gone until he hit rock bottom. Why do we have to hit rock bottom before taking direction from God or finally seeking direction? In order to follow God’s direction we must learn to listen to Him, obedience is key.

I like to use the idea of a GPS system to explain this a bit more. Like google maps, or some other app that is much better. When we use a GPS system, sometimes we don’t fully listen to them. If you're like me, and a very impatient driver, I’m working on it, you’re always looking for a shortcut. A better route, and everytime I try to find my own way, the GPS will say, “rerouting”.  I end up finally listening when I realize that I can’t find a shortcut or another way. It ends up taking twice as long because I decided that the journey the GPS chose wasn’t good enough for me. I feel like we do this to God, we sometime don’t like the direction He gives, or think we know a better way. We feel like the direction He has given us isn’t good enough. So we try to go the route we think is best and always end up at a dead end, forcing us back to very place we started. We must understand that, although we might not like or understand the path God has chosen for us, it leads somewhere. It’s definitely not a dead end.

God’s direction is infinite, He sent the Holy Spirit so that we are constantly being lead by Him. The Holy Spirit is constantly guiding our footsteps. When we hear that small still voice within that is so easy to overlook. When we get that gut feeling, or when God clearly shows us where to go. We have to listen.  Sometimes God speaks to us loud and clear, we have to know His voice and follow His words.We soon realize that following Christ isn’t bad at all, there’s so much peace and joy in the Lord. We just have to learn to hear His voice and follow it.

In order for us to follow Christ wholeheartedly and not fall away we need a few tools.

1. We must have0 a solid foundation in Christ. So that even when we stumble we won’t fall. (Matt. 13:1-9)
2. We need faith because sometimes we can’t see where the road we on is leading us. (Hebrews 11)
3. We have to trust that where God is taking us, it is the right place. It is where we need to be. (Jeremiah 29:11)
4. Obedience, we have to learn to listen to His voice, to move when He says move, stop when He says stop. (Luke 11:28)
5. Patience, because when we are seeking direction from God it might not always come when we want it to. Sometimes His direction is to be still. Sometimes God just wants us to be still. He wants us to live in the moment He has given us. Living with God and taking direction from Him isn't always about getting to the next point. It’s about being content with where we are and moving when God leads us to move, because His timing is always perfect. (Romans 8:25, Psalms 37:7-9)  

Psalms 37:23-24

The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in His way. Though He falls he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.

Reflection

1. Is it necessary for us to stray into own paths and stumble, even fall in order to follow God’s direction.
2. Reread Psalms 37:23-24, and ponder what it means to delight in the way of the Lord. Knowing that He will never let us fall He is constantly holding us up.

Prayer Time

As you pray ask God for direction, seek His answer and follow where He leads. If you are in a place where maybe you’ve fallen, or decided to take another way. Now is the time to come back. God won’t condemn you. As the father in the story, He is waiting for and is ready to celebrate your return. It’s never too late to follow Christ or return to Him. If that’s you, just confess and surrender yourself to God, and take this time to resubmit your life to HIm, or give your life to Him for the first time.

If you made the choice to follow Christ, rededicate, or to submit your life to Him fully, Go to Romans 10:9-10

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

And repeat these few words, Lord I give myself to you, I give your my heart and my life. I thank you for saving me, and I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that you are the true living God. I believe that Jesus is my savior who died and was raised in three days. I ask for your forgives and I thank you for saving me. In your precious and mighty name, amen.
