Day 286: Living Well Series (Part 2) - Winning At Life

1 John 5:12

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God's Son does not have life.

Are you winning at life?

What does winning at life look like to you?

I’m sure we have all heard these concepts of “winning at life”. Buzzfeed had probably posted articles about how to win at life, buzzfeed also probably posted a quiz, that most of us probably took, about how to know if you are winning at life. When we think about this idea of winning at life, do we think of it as just something tangible. Are we thinking about winning at life as beating our enemies, or just being better than everyone else? How does it look to win at life? What doe sit mean? First let’s define that word, to win. What does it mean, according to my dictioanry.com app on my iphone, there are quite a few different meaning of the word. All the definitions are centered around success: to finish first, to succeed by striving or effort, to gain the victory, overcome an adversary. The slang definition is to be successful or competent and be acknowledged for it. These definitions are sometimes how we as people define ourselves. We always have to be first, we have to be the best. We have to prove that we are the best and the winners by constantly working hard. The last one hits close to home, we all want to be recognized for our success. We want to be acknowledged for winning at life. Often times we put up an image, most times on instagram, to make our lives look successful, and they might be. But how successful are we if we do not have Jesus? Are we really winning if we do not have Christ in our lives?

I can tell you right now that winning at life does not look a certain way as a matter of fact it lives a certain way. How we live determines how we win. What I mean is that we cannot win at life if we are not living in Christ. The very man who gave us life, how can we live apart from Him. To take that even further how can we win at life if we do not live in Him. It took Jesus to come from His throne in heaven to not only teach us how to live, but also it took His life so that we can have life. Before Jesus came we were dying in our sin, we were losing this game of life. Jesus gave us the tools we needed to win. Theres is only one way to win at life and His name is Jesus.  John 14:16 says. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

The idea of winning at life is the idea of pushing hard to earn it, but with Jesus we didn’t earn it, He gave it to us. All we have to do is believe, all we have to do is give our hearts to Him. True winning is when we are truly submitted to christ, that’s how we win at life. We give our hearts to the man who gave up everything for us. Winning at life is still having life in eternity when everything of this world fades. When all else is gone and we still have Christ to hold on to, that’s how we know we’ve won at life.  See as long as we have Christ we are winning, if we define winning at life by how successful we are, we will never truly be winning. Because we are not always going to be or feel successful.

All this to say, winning at life is declaring our victory in christ, not in the world. Jesus gave us the tools we need to win at life, and we cannot live apart from Him.

Day 282: This Temporary World

1 Timothy 6:6-8

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.  After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.  Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.  By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

It is a beautiful revelation to understand that this physical world is fleeting and temporary, and putting our trust in it is useless. It’s great to come to the understanding that we brought nothing into this world so we can take nothing with us. Sometimes I just have to sit and remind myself that although there are many things I want out of this life, I will only put my faith and trust in God. I sit back and look at all the things I have from the clothes in my closet to the money in my bank, and I realize that one day i will be gone and the money I made will stay here, the clothes, the iphones, everything will stay and my soul will depart to be with the Lord. So I’ve learned to invest more into my soul. I’ve learned to be content with what I have and live with God. Now I am not saying that it is a sin to want to make money, or like to look good, what I’m saying is, do not be defined by what is in your bank account, or what type of clothes you wear. I say this because we are living in a generation that is consumed by image, money, and status. Everywhere I look someone is talking about how their only goal is to get up and get money. There is so much more to life than just making money. We can make all the money in the world, but at the end of the day if our soul is not saved how do we sleep in peace? If our soul is not saved does any of it matter?

Mark 8:35-37

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.  And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

We’ve all heard the saying that money doesn’t buy happiness, and I believe it can. But it cannot buy joy, that only comes from God. It cannot buy salvation, the clothes will make us look good but it will not keep us content. These are only things that we can find in Christ.

I grew up very spoiled, I had everything I wanted. I had over a hundred pairs of shoes in my closet, my drawers and closet was bursting with clothes. I grew up rarely hearing the word “no” when it came to getting what I wanted. Although my mother taught us to never find our identity in what we have and always be generous to others. We were made to get together toys and clothes we no longer used and give them to kids less fortunate than us. However I still developed the arrogance that came from all the things I had, I found my identity in what I had. The latest Jordans, or the most expensive bags. That was until I lost it all and realized that my identity is in Christ alone. Even without the riches and the clothes and things, I still had Christ. I had to come to the complete understanding that this world is fleeting, everything is temporary and when it’s all gone, who am I?

All this to say what will it profit us to everything if we do not have Christ? We cannot walk through life very long trying to fulfill ourselves off of worldly possession and tangible things. Now I’m not saying that we are to walk around denying ourselves the joys of the world. What I’m saying is, do not be defined or identified by the joys of this world but let your identity be in Christ.

2. Where is your identity found?
3. Really think about these questions and search yourself before answering them. Do not be afraid or shy away from whatever you find but rather turn to God in prayer. Allow these questions to guide your prayer.

Day 237: Foundation in Christ

1 Corinthians 3:10-13

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

We cannot build anything and have it stand unless the foundation is stable. If the foundation is not stable, the whole building is rocky, and can fall at any given moment. But if you have a solid foundation, then you’ve gotten something that can last. You have something that can stand the storms, can’t be knocked down, because the foundation is holding it up so well. It’s like having a house built on sand, when it rains, that house is sadly going to slide. But if your house has a solid foundation and built on cement, there is a great chance that it’s staying put. It’s not sliding anywhere.  You can probably guess by now where today’s devotional is going. I want to focus on the part of the scripture that says, “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid which is Jesus Christ.” If we’re laying foundations to build upon, those foundations must be laid in Christ Christ offers stability, and keeps us grounded. When we are rooted in Christ, when that is where our foundation is, we are solid. We are nearly impossible to knock down. We cannot be shaken, the foundation will never give out on us. A foundation in Christ gives us the opportunity to stand tall and firm and not worry about falling. We don’t have to worry that everything can be taken from up under us at any moment. We have security in Christ. So how do we build this foundation?

We follow the word of God. We submit ourselves to Christ, we give our lives to Christ. We believe in the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior. Meaning, we have a clear understanding that everything we are is because of everything He is. There are a few scriptures I want to point to in order to answer this question.

Luke 10:27

He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

Matthew 22:37

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'

Mark 12:30

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

Deuteronomy 6:5

Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Something I have come to realize in my life is to go to God first, He’s not my last resort. I’ve learned that when things are going crazy in my life that I must turn to God first, because He has the answer and HE can help me more than anyone else. I’ve learned to pray in the face of adversity before going to talk to my friends who can do nothing but sooth me. What we must know is that when we submit our lives completely to God and we learn to depend on Him and trust Him, He becomes our primary source and everything and everyone becomes secondary. God’s word remains the same, He doesn’t change on us, He is always the same, and that’s why a foundation in Him is so important, it’s not flaky and it’s guaranteed to stand forever.

All this to say, the answers we need are found in the word of God. Everything we are is in Him, we must find our identity in christ and follow Him all the days of our life. We must learn to depend on Him and trust Him in every area and moment of our lives, A life without a solid foundation is not a life that will get us anywhere. Lay your foundation in Christ and build on that, trust me, whatever you build will stand.

Prayer Time

Allow your answers to the above questions guide your prayer today, Talk to God about having a solid foundation in Him. If you want to rededicate your life to Christ, now is the time to surrender your life to Him.

Day 97: Let's Talk About It- "Sex and Relationships"

Romance and love is a big part of many of our lives at the moment, rather we are dating, in a committed relationship, engaged to be married, or married already. I think the biggest questions we have when it comes to question is, what is a Godly relationship, and how do we have one. The first step to having a relationship with anyone else is having a relationship with God, and finding our worth and identity within Him. Same as yesterday, there are a few topics of discussion.

It’s about love

Song of Solomon 8:7

Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.

Love is known to be complicated, it’s one of the choices on facebook relationship status, but it does not have to be. When you love someone and are in love with someone and you know for sure it takes away all the complications. Complications arise when we are in a relationship trying to figure out if we really love the person we’re with. Often times we move too quick because we are lonely and just want someone to have when we want to feel less alone. That is not love, it’s selfish. Love is selfless, We see a true example of love in Genesis 29, when Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, verse twenty states, So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.

He loved this woman so much that he was willing to give seven years of his life in order to be with her. His love was so great that seven years felt like a few days. That’s love.

Many of us have stories or testimonies where we find ourselves saying we were looking for love in all the wrong places. I know I do. If love is what we’re looking for the best place to search is in Christ, God has all the love we need.

A lot of times we get into relationships with people for what we can get out of it, and what we can benefit. I think the best lesson we can learn for having a relationship with God is that it’s a two way street, and we have to give to get sometimes. It’s not all about receiving, sometimes we have to be willing to put ourselves on the line for someone else, especially a potential spouse.

Seek Christ first.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these thing will be added to you.

One thing to remember is that no matter where we are in life, or who is in our life, God should always be number one. Before we fall in love with anyone, we fell in love with God. Christ is our first love, and that should never change, He should be the one we love above any and everyone else. We find our worth in Christ, not in man or a relationship.

We won’t always get it right the first time.

I think many of us in our twenties have been in love before, I have and it ended terribly. We are wrapped up in love, and sometimes that person was only meant to be in our lives for a season, and that is probably the hardest thing to accept. We have to realize that not everyone will find their one true love in their first relationship, and it does happen for many people. But sometimes we have to go through some cycles of lessons before we reach the real thing. All that to say is that sometimes we won’t get it right and that is okay. The hard part is learning when to walk away and accept that, the person we were with is not the person we will spend our lives with.

Sometimes we hold on to relationships that are toxic for us because we want them to work so bad, and that could mean we are trying to hold together the very thing God Himself is trying to separate, and let me tell you it will lead to a world of misery and heartache.

At one point in my life I was engaged, too young, but I was engaged. I was in this relationship and I was eighteen and I was okay with just dating, and taking things slow. I loved this person very much and this stopped me from walking away when I needed to. I held on to it for as long as I could even though I knew that one this relationship was unhealthy for me, spiritually and mentally. I held on because I loved this person very much and did not want to hurt him. By doing so not only did I hurt myself but I hurt him, and we both came out of it bitter and angry. I regretted being in the relationship for a long time, but I realized that God had me in that position for a reason, and I learned and grew in so many ways. I just had to learn to walk away when it was time.

2 Corinthians 6:14

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?

• With that being said, there is also the other side, when we see red flags from the very beginning and choose to ignore them. Sometimes we have to put our hearts and feelings aside and listen to God and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. We must be obedient or that will also lead to a world of trouble and heartache.

• We must not compromise or drop our morals for anyone. No relationship is that important. When we are planted in Christ it defeats the purpose to be in a relationship with someone who isn’t. If we cannot go to our significant other for prayer, or to have a bible study with them, or if they refuse to go to church with us, then they’re probably not the one. We have to be on the same page, lifting one another up and
• growing together in Christ. We should love God more than we love our significant other and they should love God more than they love us. That is the only way a relationship and marriage will last, is if Christ comes first in both of our lives.

It’s not about sex. (expanded passage 1 Corinthians 7:1-40)

Relationships are not about sex. I repeat, RELATIONSHIPS ARE NOT ABOUT SEX. Sex is for marriage, and marriages are not built on sex.

Sex is a pure gift from God, a gift between husband and wife as a means to bring life to this earth, to reproduce and populate the earth, As we see in Genesis 1:28, And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Sex is beautiful thing, and it has been corrupted because it has lost meaning and is now looked at as mostly a sin. But sex between a husband and wife is not,

1 Corinthians 6: 18-19

Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.  Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

Prayer Time

We talked about a lot today, take this time to talk to God about whatever is on your heart. Pray about your relationship or marriage. Whatever it is talk to God, have a conversation with Him.

Day 12: Purpose

Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is the meaning of my existence? Is there a reason? Why am I the person I am?

Questions we have all asked ourselves and probably still ask ourselves. In order to answer those questions we have to look past the shields on our eyes. We have to look past, what our purpose will lead to. We have to look past the success it will bring, the wealth, and what we can get out of it. It’s so much deeper than that. There is a reason behind everything we do, there is always a motive, whether we admit it or not. We don’t just walk for the sake of walking or speak for the sake of speaking. There’s always a reason rather big or small, it's still a reason. So what’s the reason for our existence? What are we here for?

Isaiah 43:7

Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

The answer to those questions are right there in the scripture, we are created for the glory of God. We glorify God by living in relationship with Him, being faithful and committed to Him. God made us in His image, therefore we cannot fulfill our purpose apart from Him.

It’s easy to get lost in trying to find our purpose. We often go looking for meaning in our lives, and once we think we’ve found it, it seems to slip away from us. We can sometimes get lost in the complexity of life and forget about the simple things. We often confuse our goals with our purpose, we all have that one big dream that we want to reach, and once we get there we will have fulfilled our life’s purpose. But that’s not the case at all, it’s the reason behind what we do. What is our motive? If our very existence is to glorify God, everything we do will point to Him. The way we live, the way we treat others, how we carry ourselves, it all points to God. We will use our gifts to honor Him. We use what He’s given us, to bring Him glory. This doesn’t mean that you will be a pastor, or a worship leader, or work in the church.  Wherever God has you, whether you’re an artist, a doctor, lawyer, business person, scientist, engineer, musician, mathematician, teacher, pastor, worship leader, singer, etc. Whatever you do, do it to glory of God. When we are in a relationship with God and our foundation is in Him, our hearts are in the right place. Everything we do we do because we want to honor God. Our motives change, our outlook, and our perspective changes. We now have a reason to do what we do and we give it our all because we want to give God the best.

I always thought that glorifying God meant that I had to give up my passions, and dreams, to be a minister. I was under the impression that I had to drop everything and live in the church. I thought that I could not be a Christian and an actress at the same time. I realized that God gave me the gift of acting, He gave me the ability to entertain His people, and I will use it because He gave it to me. I will use it to glorify Him.  I was constantly trying to find a way to glorify God in everything I did. Trying to force my faith into every part of my life.  I realized that when I started to live in relationship with him I did not have to force my faith into my work. It is who I am, it is the life I live, so it shines through no matter what I am doing. Because Christ is my life, I can do nothing outside of Him.

You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

John 15:5

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

1. Does your life glorify God?
2. In what ways can you use the gifts God has given you to glorify Him?

Prayer Time

Just respond to God in prayer. Stripping away all the distractions. Reread the scriptures, and tell God what is on your heart. Remember that this is a conversation between you and God, be honest with Him.

Day 11: Following God's Direction

What does it mean to take direction from God? In our twenties, we know right from wrong. We know what we should be doing and what we should not be doing. However, as we start to gain independence, we tend to get very hardheaded. We start to stray from the direction we have been given and try to take our own route. The main ages being 18 and 21. I've been both of these ages, and they haven't been my best years. The moment I felt like I could take care of myself, I stopped listening to my parents, moved out, and attempted to start my own life. It didn't go too well because I ended up back at home, with my mother being nice enough not to say "I told you so." Today I want to talk about how we sometimes declare independence from God and end up right back where we started, because he was right all along.

Yesterday we talked about believing in God as opposed to ourselves and trusting Him. Today we are going to touch on some similar themes.

Luke 15:11-24

And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.  And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger!  I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

The story of the prodigal or lost son is one of the more popular stories in the bible. If you grew up in church, you know this story back and forth.

Here we have a young heir, who was due to receive his inheritance upon his father’s death. But instead of waiting he goes to his father and demands he get what is owed to him. I guess he got tired of waiting for his father to die and requested his inheritance early. Whatever prompted him to do this, he decided to do as he pleased, and in the end realized how big of a mistake it was. He did not realize how far off he had gone until he hit rock bottom. Why do we have to hit rock bottom before taking direction from God or finally seeking direction? In order to follow God’s direction we must learn to listen to Him, obedience is key.

I like to use the idea of a GPS system to explain this a bit more. Like google maps, or some other app that is much better. When we use a GPS system, sometimes we don’t fully listen to them. If you're like me, and a very impatient driver, I’m working on it, you’re always looking for a shortcut. A better route, and everytime I try to find my own way, the GPS will say, “rerouting”.  I end up finally listening when I realize that I can’t find a shortcut or another way. It ends up taking twice as long because I decided that the journey the GPS chose wasn’t good enough for me. I feel like we do this to God, we sometime don’t like the direction He gives, or think we know a better way. We feel like the direction He has given us isn’t good enough. So we try to go the route we think is best and always end up at a dead end, forcing us back to very place we started. We must understand that, although we might not like or understand the path God has chosen for us, it leads somewhere. It’s definitely not a dead end.

God’s direction is infinite, He sent the Holy Spirit so that we are constantly being lead by Him. The Holy Spirit is constantly guiding our footsteps. When we hear that small still voice within that is so easy to overlook. When we get that gut feeling, or when God clearly shows us where to go. We have to listen.  Sometimes God speaks to us loud and clear, we have to know His voice and follow His words.We soon realize that following Christ isn’t bad at all, there’s so much peace and joy in the Lord. We just have to learn to hear His voice and follow it.

In order for us to follow Christ wholeheartedly and not fall away we need a few tools.

1. We must have0 a solid foundation in Christ. So that even when we stumble we won’t fall. (Matt. 13:1-9)
2. We need faith because sometimes we can’t see where the road we on is leading us. (Hebrews 11)
3. We have to trust that where God is taking us, it is the right place. It is where we need to be. (Jeremiah 29:11)
4. Obedience, we have to learn to listen to His voice, to move when He says move, stop when He says stop. (Luke 11:28)
5. Patience, because when we are seeking direction from God it might not always come when we want it to. Sometimes His direction is to be still. Sometimes God just wants us to be still. He wants us to live in the moment He has given us. Living with God and taking direction from Him isn't always about getting to the next point. It’s about being content with where we are and moving when God leads us to move, because His timing is always perfect. (Romans 8:25, Psalms 37:7-9)  

Psalms 37:23-24

The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in His way. Though He falls he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.

Reflection

1. Is it necessary for us to stray into own paths and stumble, even fall in order to follow God’s direction.
2. Reread Psalms 37:23-24, and ponder what it means to delight in the way of the Lord. Knowing that He will never let us fall He is constantly holding us up.

Prayer Time

As you pray ask God for direction, seek His answer and follow where He leads. If you are in a place where maybe you’ve fallen, or decided to take another way. Now is the time to come back. God won’t condemn you. As the father in the story, He is waiting for and is ready to celebrate your return. It’s never too late to follow Christ or return to Him. If that’s you, just confess and surrender yourself to God, and take this time to resubmit your life to HIm, or give your life to Him for the first time.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

And repeat these few words, Lord I give myself to you, I give your my heart and my life. I thank you for saving me, and I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that you are the true living God. I believe that Jesus is my savior who died and was raised in three days.
