Day 128: Recap

What a week it has been, I am just finishing finals weeks and move out day, and I am on my way home, but here is the recap of the week.

Day 121: From Adam to Jesus
Today we talked about to connection between Adam and Jesus, and how Jesus is referred to as the second Adam. We focused on quite a few scriptures today: 1 Corinthians 15:45, Colossians 1:15, Philippians 2:8, 1 Peter 2:24, and Colossians 2:14.

"Jesus did what Adam could not do by carrying the sin of every man on His shoulders and taking it to the grave and being raised from the dead three days later. By doing so he defeated the power of sin and death, so we no longer have to live in sin. We are no longer connected to the sin of Adam."

Day 122: Don't Wear Yourself Out

Today we talked about taking care of ourselves, our physical bodies. Something that gets neglected often when it comes to our faith. We focused on Genesis 2:2-3, Mark 2:27, Exodus 34:21, John 4:3-6, and Mark 4:38.

"...All this to say, Know your limits. I know we all want to be limitless and superhuman, but our bodies can only take so much. Listen to your body when it’s telling you to stop or rest, most times it’s right."

Day 123: No One Compares

Today we dived into Psalms 89:6-7, and talked about what we really mean or believe when we say no one compares to God.

"If we know that there is nobody or nothing that compares to God. Why do we act like there are things that can compare to the goodness of God? What I mean by that is sometimes we use God as a last resort like He couldn’t give us what we needed had we gone to Him first."

Day 124: Let's Not Jump to Conclusions

Today we talked about how many times we jump to conclusions too quick. We focused on Genesis 12:10-20 and Proverbs 2:8.

"...We think we know how the story is going to end or what will happen because we got a small taste of something. when we really have no idea. "

Day 125: On the Detour

Today we explored the book of Jonah, and how even though Jonah tried to run from God, he encountered God in the midst of his running. We focused on Jonah 1-3:5.

"I think many of us know what it’s like to not only run from God but encounter Him in the midst of our running. We, like Jonah, often have to go through the hard times in order to learn."

Day 126: Carrying the Wrong Cargo

Today we continued with the story of Jonah, but we focused on the men on the ship. These men tried to save Jonah even though it was causing them all to suffer.

"Sometimes we try to play superhero to people not realizing we are getting in the way of God’s plan. God knew what He was doing, the only way for the storm to cease was for Jonah to be thrown overboard, which is why they never made it to shore."

Day 127: Carrying the Wrong Cargo

We're continuing with Jonah today but we’re going to to hone in on a few scriptures.

Jonah 1:11-15

And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, “What should we do to you to stop this storm?” “Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.” Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it. Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God. “O Lord,” they pleaded, “don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.” Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once!

The first thing I’d like to point out is Jonah’s honesty, he knew exactly what he was doing and he wasn’t going to lie about it. We  all know what Jonah did and we know his story but today I want to talk about the other people in this story. Specifically the men on the ship. They were grieved to know that Jonah had fled from God, and brought this horrible storm upon them. However, they did not want to throw him overboard even though it was the only way to save everyone, including Jonah.

1 They threw everything overboard except the one thing or person that could stop the storm. Not knowing that the cargo they were carrying that needed to be thrown over was a man on the ship.

Sometimes we blindly avoid the very people in our lives wreaking havoc upon it. We throw away things, and people trying to find the source of whatever issue it is, but sometimes it closer than we think. The person causing their storm was in the inner part of the ship sleeping. He was resting as if nothing was going on. Sometimes the people in our lives that need to go are comfortable, and unbothered by what is going on in our lives.

2 Even after Jonah told them to throw him overboard they tried to get back to shore so they wouldn’t have to throw him overboard.

Sometimes we try to play superhero to people not realizing we are getting in the way of God’s plan. God knew what He was doing, the only way for the storm to cease was for Jonah to be thrown overboard, which is why they never made it to shore. God had to deal with Jonah, and He knew that if Jonah was back on the shore he would have found a way to Tarshish.

Another point to make is that we frequently hold on to people even when we know they are hurting us. Jonah was causing these men to be thrown around in a storm, yet they still tried to save him. There is a point where we have to let go in order to save ourselves the heartache, we have to guard our hearts and protect ourselves sometime. While doing so, we could also be saving the other person. We can have people standing right in front of us visibly hurting us, yet we don’t walk away because we want to give them another chance or believe that we can change them. One, the only person who can change the human heart is the one who made it, God. Another thing is that sometimes letting go is giving people a chance to change. Like saying, you won’t know what you have until it’s gone. Just like the men on the ship, they had to throw Jonah overboard or they were going to go down with him. There are people in our lives dragging us down, and we cannot afford to go down with them. So we have to throw them overboard, metaphorically, as much as we do not want to do it, we have to or we will find ourselves sinking with them. God will protect them, He’s got a plan, we have to worry about ourselves and give them to God.

We cannot carry around people causing a storm in our lives. Those are not people we are meant to be around or be friends with.

Day 126: On the Detour

We all know the story of Jonah and how he ran from God. I want to break it down a bit and talk about how we encounter God on the detour.

Jonah was a prophet of God, meaning he was God’s mouthpiece. Chosen to speak the words God told him directly. So God tells Jonah to go to Nineveh, and tell the people that if they don’t repent destruction is coming. Instead of going to Nineveh, Jonah was like nope, I’m out. He tried to go to Tarshish. He went to Joppa, hopped on a ship and was on his way to Tarshish. He never even made it there, God sent a storm when he got on the boat and the people staring praying to their gods, and throwing cargo over, but Jonah was the cargo that really needed to be thrown over. They go to Jonah, who was sleep. He was sleeping, he has brought havoc on these people's lives because he don’t want to list and now he’s down there sleeping while they are dealing with the storm caused by him.  So they go to him and ask him what he did, and he tells them he was fleeing from the presence of God. (Jonah 1:7) Then he tells them to cast him into the sea, and then the storm will be stopped. They tried to get back to dry land so they wouldn’t have to throw him overboard, but it was impossible. So they picked him up and threw him into the sea, and the scripture says, in the same sentence, “the sea ceased from its raging” Then it say God appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah up. Hold up, okay so God appointed a great fish. He instructed a fish to go and swallow Jonah! That’s mind blowing! Okay back to the story. Jonah stays in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

Now when I’ve seen this story depicted in picture books and things of that sort, it made it look like Jonah was in a motel. But I don’t think it was that way at all, I’ve never been in the belly of a fish and I don’t plan on it. Most people in the belly of fishes are dead so no thank you. But Jonah wasn’t dead, that’s a miracle in itself, God allowed a fish to swallow him but not kill him. Leave to God to do something miraculous like that, that only He can do. But Jonah is in the belly of this fish, and I imagine it’s dark, probably slimy and wet, very uncomfortable. But Jonah is in the belly of the whale and it is there that he starts praying, and it was then that God ordered the fish to somit Jonah up. After that experience Jonah then goes to Nineveh to do what God told him to do from the very beginning.

I think many of us know what it’s like to not only run from God but encounter Him in the midst of our running. We, like Jonah, often have to go through the hard times in order to learn. Growing up my parents would often let us make mistakes fr ourselves so that we can learn from them because telling us wasn’t enough we had to experience it in order to take their word for it. This is a common thing within humanity. Why is that so, why do we have to bump our heads to see that it hurts. Why do we have to take a detour before we realize that the straight path was there all along. Some people may disagree with me when I say this, but experience produces growth in many cases. Sometimes we have to fall to know that we can get back up. Sometimes we have to experience bad things in order to know what is good. I think God use the very disobedience of Jonah to have an encounter with him, to get his attention. There was no one else he could talk to but God while in the belly of the fish, No one else. We sometimes cause detours and bring certain things upon ourselves, we run away from God, but He will not let us get too far, even if that means taking drastic measure like causing a whole person to be swallowed by a fish. When we read the scripture we will see that Jonah never made it to Tarshish, he set out to go to a place God told him not to but his plan was intercepted. We might try to run away from God but He sees us and HE sees what we are trying to do and He will step right in and block it because He knows that his plan is better than whatever it is we are trying to do.

Day 125: Let's Not Jump to Conclusions

I’m pretty sure we all have that one friend or family member that could win the gold medal for jumping to conclusions. Even when it’s out of nowhere, and over the smallest things. We all know that one person that makes a big deal out of nothing, and complicates life more than it has to be. We all know this person, and if you don’t know this person...you most likely are this person 😁. I think we have all been in this place in our life, and are probably still going through it. I know me personally, I can be the queen of jumping to conclusions, I can jump to a conclusion faster than a from leaps through lily pads.

Today I want to talk about how we sometimes do this in our relationships with God. We think we know how the story is going to end or what will happen because we got a small taste of something. when we really have no idea.

Proverbs 28:5

Don't jump to conclusions - there may be a perfectly good explanation for what you just saw.

You ever see or hear something, and automatically come up with some type of conclusion as a reflection of what you just witnessed.  Like an argument over text, you read a text message, you can’t really know the tone of it, because it's a text message, but you create it in your head. Thus leading to an argument over assumption. Parents jump to conclusions when children are being nice and doing things we weren’t asked to do, like cleaning. They assume that we must want something. Most of the time we do but that's not the point right now. They assume before they know, but we still love them. 👅😂 My point is we have all done it, and many of us still do.

Genesis 12: 10-20

Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance,12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” 14 When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. 17 But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

Now here is a story of what can happen when you jump to conclusions too quickly. Abram probably won a lot of brownie points with his wife for this one. He told her she was so beautiful that other men might kill him in order to have her. So he came up with the plan to say they were siblings. When Pharaoh finds out he angrily sends them away. Abram could have just said, this is my wife and not been kicked out by Pharaoh. Pharaoh obviously was grieved that he almost had another man's wife. Jumping to conclusions got them both kicked out. 

Sometimes we do this to the people in our lives who mean well and even to God. We assume the worst when, if we just take the time to understand what is going on it might not be that bad. You ever concluded that God wasn’t listening or didn’t care because you did not get an immediate response, or something did not work out the way you planned. I know I have. Sometimes it’s unintentional, there’s this whole “if this, then that" theory. If God doesn’t do this by this time, then He must not want me to have it. Or if God doesn't answer, when I want Him to, then He must not be listening. That is not always the case, God is working on us, and His timing is perfect, and sometimes at the onset of trouble we assume we know how this story is going to end. Sometimes we come to the conclusion that God is punishing us for something we did wrong. God can be preparing us for a blessing or preparing us for something He is about to do in our lives but because we are so quick to jump the gun and assume, we end up standing there with our mouths open in shock when we realize what He is really doing. We can’t jump to the end before we take the journey. Sometimes the end we see is just a mountain blocking the finish line.

We also do it to other people, as Abram did to Pharaoh, and all the men of Egypt. We assume we know something about people because of what we see or feel. Abram did not give the men of Egypt a chance before coming to the conclusion that they would kill him for his wife. How many times have we done this to someone, rather it be someone we know well, or not that much? It happens a lot in relationships and friendships. The moment something doesn’t go as we think it should we assume the worst. We pull away when we think our relationships are going south. Without first taking the time to suss through what is actually going on. It may not be what we think.

Have you ever been in a position where someone assumed that you were leading a life of sin because they haven’t seen you at church in a while? Or because you are “acting different”? Or have we done it to someone else? We cannot assume we know what’s going on in someone’s life if we never talk to them. We cannot assume we know what God is doing if we only go to him when we need something.

Moral of the story, our minds can sometimes deceive us, it’s a human flaw. But we do not have to act on the conclusions we jump to. Make sure we know the full story before we assume. We might realize that we were wrong.

Day 124: No One Compares

Psalms 89:6-7

For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.

It is safe to say that there is no one who can compare to God, no one on heaven or earth. There’s no one who can get to the level of competing with God because no one is near comparison with Him. No one is heaven and no one on earth can compare to who God is. The scriptures say the highest angelic powers stand in awe of Him. There is no one nowhere like Him, God just is. He is the only person in the universe who can do the things He does. God is the only being who exist outside of time, no one else can say that about themselves. That is why eternity is in His hands because He was before anything else, including time. That is mind blowing.

I just have a couple of questions seeing that we know that there is nobody or nothing that compares to God. Why do we act like there are things that can compare to the goodness of God? What I mean by that is sometimes we use God as a last resort like He couldn’t give us what we needed had we gone to Him first. Sometimes we allow our circumstances to change how we view God, and that is a very human thing to do, but can we try putting our faith in God first. We have to learn to trust Him first not when we are all out of options. God should always be the one we go to first. It is better to put our faith in God while floating in a sea of opportunity than to wait until we have hit rock bottom. There are multiple reasons why we say no one compares to God, every person can name at least three reasons if not more.We make these blanket statements all the time but when all's said and done and everything is on the line do we really believe it? What I mean by that is, why do we put things in the place of God if no one compares to Him. Why do we look for validation in so many places when God is standing right there? I can speak for myself and say that sometimes I act like God is not enough, sometimes I act like there are things and people who are better than God, who can help me more. Because sometimes, and I’m being honest, I don’t want to pray or read my bible I’d rather talk to my friends who will be there physically. And every time I come out realizing that I should have gone to God first, I took a detour when there was no reason to. We have to realize the magnitude of this statement when we say so, no one compares. It’s like saying no one compares to Whitney Houston’s singing, or Muhammad Ali’s boxing, or Viola Davis’s acting. When we make those statements we are initially saying that they are untouchable in their field they are so great that there is no one that is could be equal to them.  

That is exactly what we mean when we say that there is no one who compares to God, not even the highest king in all the universe, not even the pope compares to God. No one, there is no one that can be equal to such a great being.

There is no one love that compares to God, no grace that compares. There is no one quite like God.

As Christians, we live to push to live our lives like Christ and love like God, and as close as we get to it, we don’t even compare. That is why He is God, we will never surpass who He is, which is why we are forever serving Him.

Day 123: Don't Wear Yourself Out

Today’s message ironically is about taking it easy, slowing it down, stopping for a moment and taking a breath. As I am currently in the midst of finals and being an RA at the end of the year, so that means preparing myself and a whole floor of college students to move out. Getting plane tickets and storages. Trying to sleep, which I have not do much of the past two days, in the last 48 hour I’ve slept for 8 of them. It is hard for me to sit down at the moment, everything is so crazy, trying to make sure I stay on top of everything as much as possible. With all this going on I find myself falling apart, losing it.

Genesis 2:2-3

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day, he rested from all his work.

Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Mark 2:27

Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Exodus 34:21

"You shall work six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest, you shall rest.

John 4:3-6

So he left Judea and returned to Galilee. He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually, he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.

Mark 4:38

Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"

Sometimes we can get so caught in everything we are doing and things we need to do that we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. We forget that sometimes we have to give ourselves a little TLC. There is nothing wrong with sitting down and resting, especially after a lot of hard work.

Our generation gets a lot of slack for being lazy but when it is time to work we are probably the hardest workers in the room. Sometimes we can work a little too hard, and overwork ourselves, and we don’t want to do that. We have to take care of the body God has given we cannot run it into the ground. We have to recuperate and rest when it’s needed.

I’ll take myself for an example, beware I am about to talk a lot about acting so bear with me for a minute. I’ve had times in classes where teachers have made me sit out because I have tried to work when I was sitting or hurt. For those of you who are performers or in the theater you know how hard the craft can be on our bodies. Today I was in stage combat class, I hadn’t eaten all day, it’s five in the evening and my knees have been bothering me the whole day. As I go to start the fight, I raised my sword, lost my balance and fell. From that point on my knees were hurting even worse. In the meantime, I had a paper due by six so I was taking every little break I could to get it finished. My partner asked me if I was okay, not wanting to stop the fight because our big test is coming up, I pushed through it. Eventually, I had to keep stopping because my knee was throbbing. At one point I stopped the fight and just hopped on one leg because I could not take the pain. That is when I decided to sit down. When I tried to get up and do the fight again my teacher would not allow me to out of fear that I would hurt myself more. I wanted to keep going because I did not want to miss out on any practice. It was good for me to sit down and not do anything because if not I would have hurt myself and not be able to take the test coming up.

All this to say, Know your limits. I know we all want to be limitless and superhuman, but our bodies can only take so much. Listen to your body when it’s telling you to stop or rest, most times it’s right.

Take a look at the above scriptures, God rested after creating for six days. The Sabbath is known as the day of rest, the scripture commands the people not to do anything on those days but rest. Jesus rested when He was tired and slept. Jesus was on that boat getting some rest when the disciples were freaking out about the storm.

Take a break when you can, even if it five minutes take the time to check in with yourself and make sure you are okay, Your physical health is just as important as your spiritual health. We have to stay healthy and not run ourselves to the ground.

Just take a moment to check in with yourself, ask God to help you recognize when you are overworking yourself and rest. Take the time to rest, your physical body.

Day 122: From Adam to Jesus

1 Corinthians 15:45

Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

Colossians 1:15

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

Philippians 2:8

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

There are many comparisons between Adam and Jesus in the theology world, but also biblically as Paul calls Jesus the last Adam in 1 Corinthians. Today we are going to explore these ideas, and get an understanding of what Paul meant when He called Jesus the last Adam.

It is largely understood that Jesus came to do what Adam could not, He came to fix the very things that had been severed and broken as a result of the fall. Jesus was the answer to a broken world that could only be fixed or saved through his sacrifice. From the moment Adam ate the forbidden fruit humanity was separated from God, and Jesus was the only one who could unite us once again.

Adam was created in the image of God, he was created a perfect man initially, completely good. When Adam was created there was no sin in the world, sin entered the world through him. Romans 5:12 states Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—We are the descendants of Adam therefore we inherited his sin. Jesus was also perfect, he was the very image of God. Jesus being conceived by the holy spirit was not born a sinner but born into a sinful world and was completely human, Jesus walked on this earth as a perfect man, never sinning or falling into sin. Both men were given a choice, Adam with the tree (Genesis 2:16-17) and Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1). Adam chose to eat the fruit which would result in the fall of humanity. Jesus would stand against the temptations of satan, and save humanity by giving his life up on the cross. The difference between the two men is that one came to fix the mistakes or even pay for the mistakes of the other. Adam was disobedient to God and chose death when he and Eve chose to eat the forbidden fruit, it was through these actions that sin sin entered the world. It was through Jesus that sin was defeated in the world. The scripture says that Jesus was obedient to the point of death, if saving this world meant dying the most humiliating and painful death known to man, then Jesus was willing to do it and He did. He was completely selfless in doing so.  

1 Peter 2:24

who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

Certain translations refer to the cross as a tree  seeing that cross was made out of wood. Ironically it goes to show that a man eating fruit from a tree is caused the fall of humanity. But years later, the promised Messiah would hang from a tree saving humanity from the result of the fall.

Adam is a representation of humanity as the Hebrew meaning of the name Adam is, man or mankind. The name Adam is also a masculine term for the word Adamah, meaning earth. We are Adam, we are the sinners who have chosen to live a life of sin, and we were and are in desperate need of a Savior. From the moment we were disconnected from GOd, He has been in constant pursuit of our heart in order to have relationship with us.

Colossians 1:14

For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

“We are all connected with the first Adam (the natural and legal head of the human race) as depraved and guilty sinners, and so are included in the sentence of death which God pronounced on him. However, all who are connected with the last Adam, Jesus, through repentance and faith in His redeeming work, are forgiven, have ‘received the free gift of righteousness’, and so ‘have passed from death to life’.”

Jesus came to save and fix this broken world, it is through His sacrifice that we are able to have a relationship with God and live a holy and righteous life, which is what God intended from the very beginning. Jesus did what Adam could not do by carrying the sin of every man on His shoulders and taking it to the grave, and being raised from the dead three days later. By doing so he defeated the power of sin and death, so we no longer have to live in sin. We are no longer connected to the sin of Adam. We have been redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus, who has taken away the impurities from humanity.

Prayer Time

As a response to today’s reading talk to God about what stood out to you. Thank God that He did not let us die in our sin, but He sent Jesus in order that we may have relationship with Him.
